eastynh
Oh yeah - I knew I was forgetting another big one... There are loads of big ones and there are loads of good ones. Its picking which ones to mention. For the lad who asked whether he would know any tunes. Go give Violator and Songs Of Faith And Devotion a listen. That is them at their absolute peak and both albums deserve a listen.
Gucci Piggy
I've heard Enjoy The Silence (like a moody Pet Shop Boys), I like the video to People Are People but doesn't ring a bell, Everything Counts was poor imo, Just Can't Get Enough is a tune- always thought it was someone rubbish like Yazoo, Personal Jesus seems more modern & have heard it before, bit boring though. Edit: Were they properly massive then? Worldwide they were properly massive; biggest selling electronic group of all time I think. Weren't as big here as elsewhere. dentalplan
Just Can't Get Enough is a tune- always thought it was someone rubbish like Yazoo, Well the guy who wrote it left Depeche Mode and started Yazoo so close enough. Edit: Were they properly massive then? They are probably the biggest electronic band in history. It is a hard thing to try and sum them up in a few words. When they first broke out, they did all the teeny bop magazines like smash hits so their credibility has always suffered a bit over here. But they were a truly innovative and ground breaking band. They do not get the credit they deserve over here but world wide they are huge. They still fill football stadiums out abroad and are one of the few British bands to truly crack America. They really are an enigma and they are difficult to sum up. Give Violator and Songs Of Faith and Devotion a listen.
Gnomicide
Can't be doing with Depeche Mode. The level of popularity they reached, especially in the States, is ridiculous. Shocking band.
Mardy
yeah, exactly what eastynh says, a very contradictory band. They are massive worldwide, I've lived and worked in half a dozen countries over the last 20 years, and everywhere else they have a simultaneous mass popularity and an element of, for want of a better word, coolness or credibility. But back in the UK, they're kind of not spoken of or seen as slightly embarrassing. It's really odd, and seems to be entirely based on a perception of them, rather than their music. Give it 30 years, and once all of them are dead, it'll be reassessed.
stuartbert two hats
Well the guy who wrote it left Depeche Mode and started Yazoo so close enough. I'm not keen on Yazoo (or Erasure) or most of Depeche Mode's work, but I really like that first Depeche Mode album that Vince Clarke wrote. But if it is to be believed, they keep turning down Glastonbury. Now that is surely detrimental to that being accepted so to speak. If there was ever the opportunity to showcase what is now a vast arsenal of records and change peoples opinions of them then Glastonbury is what they need to do. I could understand if they were not arsed but from watching their interview on the Johnathan Ross show last year, it is clearly something that still irks them
eastynh
Biggest band to never have a number one over here or something aren't they? Yes, they have had more top 40 singles than any other band without getting to number one.
kalifire
I honestly can't imagine Depeche Mode headlining. It would cement Glastonbury's reputation as the place old and, in the eyes of some, irrelevant bands go to headline, and that would make it very unappealing for a huge number of people who'd otherwise buy tickets. Commercially, it would be unwise. That's not a comment on whether or not I think DM are any good, just what message it sends about the festival. Gucci Piggy
Brilliant band, my parents always thought they were an absolute joke. Dad thought I was mad to go to Belgium to see them headline Werchter.

I kind of agree with you even if they are my fave ever band. But they headlined other major European festivals last year. It maybe a bit of a coup being the only ever UK festival to get them to headline. But I honestly don't know. I think they would be fantastic. I do not think their level of support in the UK justifies a headline slot. But there is not a chance they would play any less than a headline slot. I suppose it depends on the rest of the line up. You could get away with Depeche Mode if rest of the line up is more up to date. They have just never fit in and no one knows what to do with them. Maybe thats what has given them all the success. They do deserve a major uk headline spot at a festival. It will be a travesty if they don't get to do it and if they have previously been offered then they only have themselves to blame. 49Lawson
I know it's highly unlikely but I'd love it if Depeche Mode headlined, one of the few bands I'd love to see but have never got around to seeing for all sorts of reasons haha
russycarps
Can't be doing with Depeche Mode. The level of popularity they reached, especially in the States, is ridiculous. Shocking band. Agreed. Dreadful band. Their popularity is baffling. I reckon they havent got the balls to headline glastonbury as they are scared they'll get a tiny crowd and be embarrassed. The fact they are largely disliked in the UK really bothers them. It's great. The frontman comes across as an absolute throbber too.

a_kelaz
Seen Depeche Mode in Dubai last year as part of a three day event, half the crowd left after half an hour it was soooo boring to watch, I wouldn't be impressed if they got a headline slot. HGavin
I don't get them. Watching those live clips they don't seem to have a particularly inspiring live show. Tried to get into them last year when they were a strong rumour here for Glastonbury, listened to their key albums and a few historic shows but.. meh. Personal Jesus is good. The rest seems alright. I won't completely write them off but I don't understand the attraction. The frontman doesn't seem that great live either right now, judging by that Berlin clip. Maybe they're a 'you had to be there' kinda band.
