Top 5 of Glastonbury 2014

Tough question this year - lots of great performances and kept going down front so YMMV

Chvrches - felt like the sort of performance that could make them really take off, the crowd loved it and their stagecraft seriously pro for new blood.

Dolly Parton - such a pro. Seeing the crowd initiated wave spread all the way back up the hill behind us was quite moving - no encouragement needed, everyone was utterly loving it

Imagine Dragons - coming out mud-drenched was brilliant and then their performance, crowd interaction and a massively singalong crowd made it really special

Jon Hopkins - surpassed high expectations and risk within minutes and just got better from there.

De Ls Soul - worked it like the pros they are through blazing sunshine, just perfect.

My five:

Kacey Musgraves

London Sinfonietta

Pixies (was expecting Jack White to be the better of the two but it was definitely the opposite)

English National Ballet

Ellie Goulding (seriously; beat the hell out of the boring Black Keys)

Honourable mentions - Attilla the Stockbroker followed by Michael Rosen in the poetry tent; Arcade Fire rocked their headline slot.

Had a fairly diverse year.

Chronologically....

London Sinfonietta/Johnny Greenwood

Rodrigo y Gabriella (as always, just gobsmacked amazement)

Mogwai (as above)

Brian Jonestown Massacre (Watching it back on iplayer as I write)

Massive Attack

Still chronologically, a massive massive mention to Blueneck who played at midnight last night in the Avalon Cafe and provided a beautiful arse-kicking cherry on top of the whole shebang.

Good weekend!

Royal Blood

Arcade Fire

Kasabian

The Smyths

Haim

no order

Other mentions:

Never seen Ed Sheeran before live and have very little interest in his music but we bailed on The Horrors to check him out. I thought he was brilliant.

Hip-hop karaoke. Fucking genius. Saturday was better than the Sunday due to it being a bit busier. Presenters were hilarious and some of the performances were too. Special mention to the guy who near enough nailed B.O.B (OutKast) on Sunday.

Wasn't tii fussed about The Kooks. Spent too much time showcasing their new album when it's not out yet (i don't think?).

Because I was working, missed a few that I'm sure would have been top five, like St Vincent and John Grant (both of whom I'm seeing later in the year, thankfully). However still saw loads of great acts so, in no particular order:

1. Arcade Fire - proper headliners - one of the best I've seen in recent years.

2. Dolly P - the undoubted event of G14.

3. Tune Yards - thrilling, inventive set.

4. Paul Heaton and Jacqui Abbott - the most fervent audience response of the weekend

5. The Bad Shepherds - great atmosphere in Avalon Tent and brilliant folk interpretations of some of my all-time favourite songs. Shouldn't work but it did! Emotional too, given the circumstances.

Also loved Jurassic 5, Bonobo, Sun Ra Arkestra and The Wailers.

In no order:

- Metallica

- John Wizards

- London Sinfonieta/Jonny Greenwood

- Manic Street Preachers

- Jurassic 5

Robert Plant is a close sixth, and he seemed to be genuinely happy to be back on the Pyramid Stage. Fingers crossed that bodes well for him to bring back his other friends next year.

And those I'm most sorry I missed:

- Royal Blood

- Tinariwen

Metallica \m/ (Pyramid)

Jagwar Ma (Williams Green)

Wytches (Williams Green)

Gaz Coombes (Williams Green)

Mik Artistik (Rocket Lounge and Summerhouse)

(also a special mention to the Lounge Kittens who played in the West Holts bar. Three lounge singers doing covers of things like Disturbed/System of a Down/Limp Biscuit/House of Pain and some more 'mainstream' stuff and were hilarious. They completely made up for the number of twunts who kept pushing past me at Jurassic 5 to the point we left!)

Deltron 3030

Beans on Toast (Hell Stage)

Jack White

Mogwai

Disclosure

Honorary mentions to Dolly & The Wailers, plus Thunderbirds Are Go!

I missed most of The War on Drugs' set due to the Blondie crush, but the 15 minutes I saw suggested they'd have been in my top 5.
