Other Stage Headliners 2015

I think I'd rather Sigur Ros headlined the Other stage to be honest, as brilliant a booking having them headline the Pyramid would be. No matter how brilliant we all think they, loads of people would just natter through stuff like Vaka, and we'd all get really pissed off. You wouldn't get that to the same extent on the Other stage.

This is probably the best compromise unfortunately, but if it means them getting the headline slot then it's a lot better than nothing.

The Other Stage field would be jammed to the rafters I think.

In reply to eastynh, I'd love to see James get a big slot as well.

Brilliant catalogue of tunes and guarantee crowd pleaser of a set.

Depeche Mode's ship seems to have sailed maybe.

Again I hope I'm wrong but just get the feeling last year was their time.

All the Doves talk has me a bit depressed they're not around anymore but I expect Black Rivers to make an appearance next year and their early stuff has promise

In an alternate universe where there's such thing as "good" art, Sigur Ros are way better at music than James. They're also more popular. Do agree they'd be better suited to the Other Stage, though.

I had a ticket to see them at the Eden Project a couple of years back. Didn't go because I was feeling a bit sad. Regrettable, in hindsight.

Doves and Elbow you may be correct on. I love doves but that was mainly because I loved sub sub and then followed their career. Elbow bore me shitless.

I also said bands like New Order and Depeche Mode deserve a high slot at Glastonbury before Sigur Ros.

In regards to James, never ever ever are Sigur Ros blowing James away. Not only are James a far better live proposition but they have far better songs and a far better back catalogue. I have seen both bands live and Sigur Ros do not come anywhere close to James.

Never in a million years would Sigur Ros get a reaction from fans at a gig like James

Sigur Ros gig

The James gig makes the hairs on the back of your neck stand on end.

Now I like Sigur Ros but there is no way they would blow James away.

Well Sigur Ros are hardly a sing-along kind of band so obviously they would get a different reaction to that James crowd.

Headlining Other is the best we can hope for for Sigur Ros imo, they won't headline and wouldn't accept a sub spot on the Pyramid due to it being too light. Really hope they play at some point over the next few years, fantastic live band.

Am not sure Sigur Ros are better at music than James. James are talented musicians in their own right and have far better songs. James are not art, they are a pop group (although they were considered quite arty at the start)

I think what makes James stand head and should above most bands is that they are adaptable enough to play alongside the Halle Orchestra at the Bridgewater Hall, play mid afternoon slots at V and TITP or headline stages at Glastonbury and appeal to most of the people there.

From a live perspective Sigur Ros do not come close to James. Also in regards to popularity, how do you measure that? James are still playing arenas and I would hazard a guess have sold more records than Sigur Ros. I think it is debateable whether Sigur Ros are as popular as James especially as in Britain.

Just to add as an edit, I do like Sigur Ros. But I just found it hard to believe that someone would just dismiss James out of hand and say Sigur Ros would blow James away.

Yeah, you wouldn't want anything other than quiet reverence at a Sigur Ros gig. One of the best bands I've ever seen. I only knew the big Takk songs the first time I saw them, so was just expecting two hours of anthemic stuff. They played I Gaer second, and the sudden snare crack followed by that massive wall of noise scared the living daylights out of me. I spent the rest of the gig in a mild state of shock.

This was my point when I suggested Sigur Ros would be better at some where like Jodrell Bank where it is the perfect setting to really appreciate them.

How do you gauge that? By how many people they get to jump around or what? Even the Courteeners would top Sigur Ros on that front.

Quiet reverence is exactly what I associate with Radiohead's headline gig in 2003.

It remains the best gig I've ever seen, albeit I was in a seriously enhanced state.

All of which goes to show that headline slots don't need to be singalong.

I think the Pyramid field is a fine setting for a wall of noise and lights that has people staring in stunned silence for 90 minutes

Like everything when it is an opinion then you can not factually gauge anything. I will go off my own experience and say that from a live perspective I appreciated Sigur Ros more than I enjoyed them, compared to James who made the hairs on the back of my neck stand on end.

James are not just a sing along band. Yes they have the tunes you can either jump up or sit down to. Yet they have the songs you can also stand and appreciate. They are such an adaptable band. James can and have played their songs with orchestras in posh halls so that people can appreciate them. But they can also stop playing mid song while the crowd carry on accapella. That is what makes them stand apart from others.

Fair enough, like you said it's all opinion based really! To be fair I'd never heard James outside of Sit Down and always assumed they were one of those 90s bands who are a bit of a product of their time like Suede or Elastica or something. Just gave a few of their songs a listen and liked every one so far.

Their 'Best Of' compilation is one of the best 'Best Of's you can get I think

They should really not be lumped in with bands like that mate as they were nothing like that. In the 80's they were kind of alternative and arty. They were Morriseys fave band at one point and the Smiths resident support band. The 90's was their stadium rock phase with sing along anthems and now they produce clever and well crafted pop songs.

They have supported some of the biggest names in music and been supported by the likes of The Stone Roses, Happy Mondays, Radiohead.

The do acoustic tours, play with orchestras and play strange and wonderful places.

They really are one of the UK's little treasures.

Heres a single from last year. Fantastic song and great video

I've seen both live too. James were absolutely fantastic live and one of my favourite live bands, but Sigur Rós are just better and a much better proposition to headline the Pyramid. Just a difference of opinion.

I've just given that new track a listen, and I'd defo go and see him if he had a full band.

Not heard the new track, but I did quite like the last album he done with "The Business Int.". Didn't manage to make it to any of those shows so I'd go see him if he stayed away from the covers with various guests thing he used to do.

Always thought James were a band trying to imitate The Cure/The Smiths/REM but lacked the defining character of those acts

However, I had a listen to that new song and it was pretty good

They are nothing like any of them to be fair. There is not really a label you could pin on James as they have experimented with everything during their career.

I agree.

What happened last time?

the best part of ten years ago, at Bestival, when Ronson had just released that covers album.

He had Lily A come on stage for 'Oh My God', and Amy Crackhouse for 'Valerie' (tho i can't remember which way around now).

It was like the best champagne followed by vomit cider. I'll leave you to work out which was which. :P
