Also in regards to popularity, how do you measure that? James are still playing arenas and I would hazard a guess have sold more records than Sigur Ros. I think it is debateable whether Sigur Ros are as popular as James especially as in Britain.

James don't play 'arenas', plural. They play one arena. In Manchester. Because they're from Manchester (and Mancs seem big on seeing acts from their own city for some reason, much more than anywhere else. See also: Courteeners). Everywhere else they play much smaller venues.

Sigur Ros play arenas (or multiple dates at smaller venues) all across the country, and play much higher slots at festivals (headlining Latitude, subbing Bestival etc). They're undeniably bigger as a live draw than James. Sorry.

I'm enjoying the James/Sigur Ros my-dads-bigger-than-yoursing. But for the love of all that is right and proper, well people please stop mentioning the couteeners!

FFS, you know how juju works!

Sorry! Won't happen again, I promise :P.

Now you put it like that it is a somewhat bizarre discussion to be having at all. But then a certain poster does like to shoehorn allusions to Manchester bands regardless of relevance into every conversation, so I suppose it's to be expected.

I am going to watch James at Birminghim Arena next Saturday.

You can debate whos bigger all you like. James have sold far more records. James are a fantastic live band are far more adaptable and enjoyable than Sigur Ros.

To be fair I said there were British bands far more deserving than Sigur Ros to get prominent slots at Glastonbury.

A poster then said Sigur Ros would blow James out of the water to which I dissagreed. Someone then started going on about Sigur Ros being far bigger than James which I said was debateable. For the record are James really a Manchester band? The singer is from Leeds and most of the members are not from Manchester.

Fuck sake the idea of Sigur Ros headlining the pyramid is now forever in my mind. Won't happen though will it? Like realistically. It's a great thought but no way would they take the risk, would be fantastic to see them anywhere tbh.

yeah it's never gonna happen. as popular as Sigur Ros are over here they still sing in a made up language. that's weird enough to stop them from ever being at the top, regardless of the rest of the music

Yeah, covered that in my reply to scruffylovemonster - you got me there, they are now, seemingly, arena-sized :).

Whether James are fantastic live / adaptable / enjoyable is just as debatable as anything else.

'More deserving' - I think Los Campesinos! are a British band hugely deserving of a Glastonbury headline spot. Because I love them. I didn't reply to people talking about Sigur Ros with that, out of nowhere, though, because it's patently absurd and completely irrelevant. The same applies to James.

I think you might want to take up your objection to them being a Manchester band with basically any article ever written about them :P. Would you prefer 'Manchester-formed-and-based-and-heavily-associated-with-that-music-scene band'?

I would much prefer them to headline the Other than the Pyramid, as previously mentioned, i wouldn't want a pyramid headline spot ruined by 50% of the field taking all the way through the quieter songs destroying the atmosphere. Mogwai on the Park was so good this year because everyone was there to appreciate the music meaning there was silence during the songs so the atmosphere could really build.

Sigur Ros at Jodrell Bank was pretty much perfect, except that they didn't play Svefn-g-Englar.

Unlikely, but it would be brilliant for them to be anywhere on the lineup this year.
