People do lots of things for lots of different reasons. Many people do things because of peer pressure, or because they think it's a cool thing to do.

I don't think I'd admire someone exactly, I'd respect someone who had come out the other side, not because they were cool but because they'd got themselves out of a desperate situation.

Yeah heroin is pretty cool until you lose your looks or stop paying the bills. So I guest as long as it has not messed up you or your life who really cares right? In fact it's rather romantic to have taken the risk chasing the dragon to then come out the other end of it don't you think? It's like putting youselve in the worst position and just brezzing though something that so many others end up consumed by. Not all addicts are uneducated down and outters. So screw what people think anyway.

Lots of upper-class people have used, lots of middle-class professionals, and leading-light type people like Will Self, along with endless amounts of talented people including actors and musicians.

You sound like you or the person you're referring to is well out of it but don't drag yourself down about it.

I always struggle to understand why any form of drug use is romanticized.

Because, used correctly and with a little control and info, drugs are freaking awesome.

"Cool" is external - for other people, an act or shell to enhance social desirability. Drugs are great because they're internal, personal experiences.
