Inputting postcodes

When typing in postcodes do they have to be EXACTLY as they appear in your registration, i.e upper/lower case, gaps/no gaps?? The people I'm trying with tomorrow all have different formats- don't want to be slowed down getting them right, but equally don't want postcodes to be rejected!
