Electronica/Dance

Got my tickets for the first time in a couple of years, so delighted to be able to be back on efests (and of course the Electronic / Dance thread) without getting all depressed.

Warming up with Prodigy (and the always awesome Jaguar Skills) pre Christmas at Brixton Academy. First time seeing prodigy since Keef passed - gonna be a good one.

They were fab last year at ally pally - my show of the year!

Looking forward to brixton - i'm doing the late show (all my mates wanted to - seem pointless as it ends just after last tube, confused what the point is honestly lol)

Did not realise that there were different timings for the shows - turns out we are the late show as well, although not so much of an issue as we will almost certainly drive in (we're not big drinkers anyway) and its just so much easier / more pleasant for us coming from the burbs rather than a 2/3 hour tube / train / taxi home.

Brixton and the prodigy is the perfect match. Insane gigs there. I was there for Keefs last gig and the first without him

Totally posted a message in the wrong thread, it was meant for this one...

Where are Soulwax at these days?

They toured plenty last year, both as Soulwax and as 2ManyDJs.

And they continue to produce plenty on Deewee.

No idea about a farm appearance.

Upperground last night at Drumsheds was the fourth Friday this season where they shuffled the line up and only opened X and Z rooms. £6 tickets on Tickets for Good were available a couple of days beforehand and they've also already listed them for Hydra presents Honey Dijon's House Nation, which is still a couple of weeks away.

Last weekend with Dom Dolla was a weird one as it was 'sold out' but they still shut Y and moved some of the DJ's from there to the other two rooms. Was also an announcement this week that they're planning a limited run of shows for Spring so looks as if things aren't going as well as they'd like at the moment?

Not sure if the issue is too many events or the fact the venue is massive, so they probably need 10,000 or so in each night to make it viable? I'd be happy if they did some where they closed the main room and only opened Y and Z. Capacity for those two is about 6,000 so gives more options around the line up.

The other way they could go is to book a few nights with the likes of Calvin Harris and Swedish House Mafia, which would sell out pretty much straight away, and offset some of the other events that don't do so well. Doubt they'd want to go down that route as it's against brand and not what they're about really. Needs must and all that though...

Soulwax live at Glasto would go down an absolute STORM! I can definitely see it happening this year :))

Yes... about time now.  Lets manifest that for 2025!

Don't you worry about Soulwax.... you'll be busy with Basil Brush and Mr Maker 😉

I’ve not been to Drumsheds, but have been to several nights at WHP. To me (being from near Sheffield), Drumsheds seems more of a pain for accomodation/getting to, with it being seemingly in the middle of nowhere, compared to WHP, which is city centre, near hotels etc. Maybe trying to draw 10,000 people each night out of London is proving more difficult than they thought?

Dom Dolla sold out at least a month in advance - must have been a good reason to shut Y. Or maybe went for a cash grab on a day that actually did well to subsidise the rest.

Would be a bit crap with just Y and Z, they are very boring rectangular rooms (not that the main room isn't but still)

Location is the biggest issue - WHP in a much smaller city has been doing more nights with 10k for years and still does pretty well (bit weak this year). London also has a lot more competition i guess - WHP is the only club really to get any of the big names it gets

General costs of London must play a part too - hotels are often £200+ a room at the weekend

This is an aside, but this isn't without controversy.

There's been pushback from Hidden and Loft lately (Teletech at the former and Animal Crossing at the latter), be interesting to see who Amber's gets.

It was interesting/surprising Jamie XX didn't touch it this time despite the Ally Pally shows.

I wonder if the days of the superclub are over. Djs left right and centre publishing their love for playing the Concourse at WHP - 2500 capacity vs 10000 in the Depot.

I can't see WHP going anywhere soon - well until its meanwhile use ends.

While some DJs may love concourse - a great room of course, many also love the payday of depot!

There’s plenty of security and stewards to make sure everyone gets to the station safely. Really got it nailed there tbh - been a few times

Think they meant for the occasional 3am shows

I do know someone got mugged leaving before from a 11 one though - literally on the way out of the club not sure of specifics

Drumheads problem is the lineup is consistently much weaker than WHP.

I don’t understand why.

I thought some were stronger this year.

I guess acts are more expensive in London due to competition, rent is probably higher, increased wages etc.

Most DJs are paid based on crowd size too so its not actually all that scalable.

Feel like theres a lot more logistics involved with Drumsheds too due to location - they run free shuttle buses for late shows for instance.

Agree WHP was the weaker this year, but it's 18 years established now - albeit growing in size across 4 venues - so has earned its rep. I can't pretend to know much about London clubbing but does Drumsheds have the same backstory? Genuine qu.

Also, Manchester is definitely having a moment right now (nice to live nearby completely by accident). It'll no doubt pass, it's the north after all. We're not allowed nice things.
