Electronica/Dance

Electronica for me is mood music and if I just want to party with friends there's no one better than Norm. Sure, the tunes might be just on the credible side of EDM and the mixing might not technically be the best, he just plays party music for happy people and I love the guy. He's unpretentious and obviously super passionate about what he does and I dig that about him. If I want to take my mind off somewhere by myself I'll choose something a little deeper, darker, hypnotic or more sophisticated. Some sets it's great to stop dancing, step back and listen to the craft of a great DJ at work and really appreciate their skills.

This is why I love electronica so much. There are so many variations on a theme, meaning I can flip from genre-to-genre from one stage or night to the next. And Glastonbury gives me the perfect opportunity to do so while expanding my horizons at the same time.

I do feel you though, Ben. There are some DJs, artists and genres that don't do it for me either. I was at Mysteryland Festival in Holland last year and there was a gabba stage, which was just insane. Absolutely not my thing but I stayed watching a couple hundred kids loving it for well over an hour, it was infectious. I suppose my point is, it's all good as long as everyone's having fun. For me that's what it's all about.

Cracking post. Norm has always come across as entirely genuine, loving what he does and, most importantly to me, besotted with Glastonbury. For the latter alone I’ll always have huge respect for him. No piss take, I actually afford the same respect to Chris Martin, who seems to have a deep love of the festival and its ethos.

My ‘problem’ is that I struggle really to enjoy dance music unless it hits my sweet spots. I use the plural as, contrary to my mantra, I’m not just a one trick techno pony. For example, a George Fitzgerald set a couple of years ago is one of my favourite ever, and it was varied and far from pure ‘techno’, but it was a masterpiece. So much so that I/we were furious when he finished after 2 hours as that tour had been mostly ‘all night long’ and we thought we were getting that! But, the set still HAS to push my buttons and give me that feeling of abandon and immersion for it to work. I’m not a casual dancer! That echoes pretty much everything in my life in which I am an all-or-nothing type. It’s one of the reasons I don’t go out that often - ensuring that every night out is carefully selected to be confident that it will deliver what I need. I went out a few weeks ago to a mostly tech-house night, convincing myself that it would be great, as I hadn’t been out for ages and needed a blow out. Predictably, it was only ‘ok’ and I arrived home somewhat unrequited...

So, sorry, Norm - I’m sure you’re fine, but fine means I’m elsewhere!

Sister Bliss playing big trancey bangers. Seen 'Faithless DJ' twice supporting Orbital. Good fun.

⬆️ This. Sister Bliss selects well and plays crowd pleasing, non-cheesy stuff. It’ll be fun*. I saw her supporting Orbital too and it was much better than Leftfield (never quite got them...) who were inbetween her and the Hartnolls.

*of course, I won’t be there! I’ll be being wooed by Anthony Parasole.

Loftgroover. Now there's a name I've not heard for a while. Nosebleed stuff. The main gabba guy in the south west used to be Scorpio, he was really popular, dunno if he's still going.

Definitely remember the name from old Helter Skelter Technodrome tape packs. Contemporaries included the likes of Clarkee, who popped up on my Facebook feed yesterday.

Yeah, me too - from the rave era (probably because it's such a silly name).

I actually thought the first Loftgroover tape I heard was recorded at the wrong speed because it was sheer white noise coupled with the cries of the souls of the damned being torn to ribbons in the brimstone pits of hell.

Right, this year I'm off the naughties due to mental health issues. Usually it's a great aid when it comes to the late night stuff as I'm not really into dance music particularly, but do enjoy a good booty to it when flying. However that won't be the case this year, but I'd still like to enjoy the naughty corner.

I'm big into Hot Chip and LCD Soundsystem, plus plenty of big beat stuff like Chems, Justice, Prodigy, Fatboy Slim etc. Saw Skrillex too and enjoyed it. My kind of 'dance music' tends to be proper disco and funky stuff, like Chic, Craig Charles, Abba plus New York Brass Band etc.

Given the vague and generic outline, can anyone recommend me some acts or DJs from the line up that may be up my street?

Hang in there man - power to you for being open about it and for knowing you don't need the gear to enjoy the beats. On a disco vibe: Jayda G is fuckin ace; Carl Cox is playing a disco set (but neither in the SEC), Dan Shake also an option (has a set in the meat rack). Greenpeace might have a few good options for you later on too (Crazy P?).  Prospa are new and I think might be up your street. Check out some sets from a lot of the names above here: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1BzyCqFTgA8W64VGxlTA-ctmum77HUPvjltC8MJ8K0uc/edit#gid=0

I was a touch surprised SOPHIE wasn't on the line up

She’s on Transgressive who have a Special Guest at their night at the Rabbit Hole. Before Let’s Eat Grandma who’s album she produced on. Possible?

Anyone know where this is? Not seen it on official line up?

You have my taste in 'dance' music. Eager to hear what others say... I usually struggle to find my taste in the SE corner.

Dan Shake has already been recommended. My vague intention for Friday is so to see him then Prosumer before Soul Summit Music (NYC) in the Downlow followed by Deptford Northern Soul at Deluxe Diner.

Also did you see the Justice film is being shown at Pilton Palais, don't know what that'll be like? I saw the Chems Don't Think at Bestival one year and it was ace.

Cracking line-up. Never bothered with the queue before...might tempt me to try (get impatient and inevitably fail)

Is his mixing that ropey? I got the imprsssion he can do trainwreck-free basic beatmatching and fading (I reckon anyone who plays with the EQs for no real reason as he/The Black Madonna does is trying to overcompensate though TBF).

I saw him at Space about ten years ago and every mix was off, I’m sure he can beat match, but he had given up early doors when I saw him.
