Pukkelpop 2015

I think the main problem for me is that we were all expecting the main bands announced yesterday (LP, Ellie Goulding, Bastille etc) but were also expecting at least one quality headliner (Blur for example) and some quality subs to balance it out. Now we're just left with the worst half of what we thought would happen without the good stuff and probably the weakest headliner PP has ever put on. If the quality is to come later I.e. Beck etc it's a strange way of going about things. This last headliner needs to be a massive name for things to turn around positively.

I also think the bigger medium sized band's such as Underworld, Tame Impala and the Interpol have been really underplayed by the organisers. They've hardly had a mention.

Have to agree with you there, if they'd had the exact same list of names and added Blur or Kings Of Leon even, then it would have looked a lot better.

(Plus, the layout of the poster confuses the issue too, every other festival seems to list the headline acts, then everyone else. If I could, I'd Photoshop the poster, move the name around a bit and it would look loads better. Like you say, pick out Underworld etc)

Kings of Leon. Not my bag, but if they were announced you'd be looking OK headline wise I suppose.

For example, of they went something like

Netsky/Kings Of Leon/Ellie Goulding/The War On Drugs

That would stand up at most festivals

Or

Major Lazer/Linkin Park/Seasick Steve/Rudimental

I'm pretty sure Rudimental, Major Lazer and Netsky are each closing the Main on the day they're playing.

Like last year, they've gone for a package of 'headliners', rather than a big name each day, which has pros and cons. The three dance acts all now fit into that category, as do The Offspring, Limp Bizkit, Ellie Goulding and Bastille (ironically, Bastille are the most tenuous inclusion imo). Linkin Park are the only real 'out-and-out' headliner so with them that makes a total of 8.

Of course a lot of this comes down to opinion; I'm sure if some of those above we're replaced with the likes of Beck, The Libertines, The Prodigy, The Chemical Brothers etc then there'd be just as many people upset about that. The 'loss' of Blur is obviously a big blow for the overall strength of the bill but I'm going to wait and see what the final line up is like before passing judgement. There's enough currently there to confirm I'll be going anyway so everything else that comes in the future is more than welcome, even if it will undoubtedly mean clashes.

Agree with what you said about the likes of Tame Impala, Interpol and Underworld Dave, they're subbing, or at least high up, at a number of other festivals this summer.

Good effort. The Saturday is by far the strongest day so far and that's even without a headliner.

Was thinking the same thing. Probably doing only Saturday, and spending the money I save on a full weekend of Dour.

I still don't get what makes Limp Bizkit jump up 2 or 3 spots since 2010. Same thing for Parov Stelar Band actually, last year they merely got an afternoon slot in the smallest Werchter tent.

Aye, Friday weak as piss at the moment. But seeing the names like this you do think that there will be a good end to it. If the go Ellie Goulding followed by Bastille followed by Major Lazer I'd be well up for that (I agree that it's missing a real headliner).

Bastille would be "on in the background" whilst I got a beer and some food I suppose, but I think that would be a fun night.

Watched Ellie's set on the glasto coverage on the beeb and it looked like a good time was had by all and even a 41 year old Neil Young fan (i.e me) got into it. Me and the Mrs both said we'd definitely watch her next time she popped up on the festival circuit.

and I really want to see FFS, so all is not lost, but certainly the weakest of the three days so far.

Rather than add another post, you can start looking at the days and get some good stage lineups in all honesty. For example

Main Sage

Rudimental /Linkin Park /Interpol /Seasick Steve /Jurassic 5/ George Ezra /School is Cool or someone local and famous-ish

Just have to wait and see I suppose. Last year, I was most excited about The Club (on a single day they had The War on Drugs, Thurston Moore, Kurt Vile, Wild Beasts, First Aid Kit. That's a lineup one of the cooler small festivals in the UK would have on their main stage and everyone would lose their minds!)

Right, Kings Of Leon in Barcelona 24th-25th July. No other European dates announced yet. Let's face it, they're not coming to Europe for just the one show so I'd be as sure as anyone can be that there will be other gigs. Will one of them be Pukkelpop? Who knows, but there aren't many other Festivals around mid to late Summer missing a headliner, are there?

On a side note, BST has reduced their prices. Well any of the 2 days (aside from Taylor Swift) for 100 quid. Very tempted to do the Strokes and Blur gigs. Treat that as my music fix and just go to PP for the party side of it. Dying to see the Strokes and this may be my only opportunity this year

Kings of Leon don't have a proper tour announced at the moment. They officially said that they're working on a new album, and at the moment they only have some festivals scheduled. So they probably want to do some summer festival shows to play live and to try some new songs to prepare themselves for their new tour. That's why I think that we could expect anything from them. In my opinion doing only one Spanish show wouldn't be very kind for their European fans.. But who knows

U2 are in Europe from the first week in September, they could come over a week or so early for the Saturday night eh.....?

Won't happen though, will it.

I touted U2 as a potential headliner a few pages back, after seeing the big gap in their schedule, and it would explain why they've skimped on the line up so far as they'd cost a bomb. The two Antwerp shows have both sold out so that's not a problem. They could of course if offered the gig, be reluctant to do it as the Glastonbury performance wasn't great.

Would be a massive, massive booking though.

Another thought is maybe they've held back on the 3rd (and hopefully main) headliner until after the majority of the tickets have been sold so it doesn't disrupt the festivals demographic of punters as it has been before with Metallica, for example where the band is that big that people buy a ticket just to see them.

Or of course it could be fucking Snow Patrol.

I can only think that the budget is tight due to Euro being shite against the pound and US dollar.

That most probably is an important factor this year but the reality is none of us know what the PKP bank balance is like. I wouldn't be surprised if the last three years have been run at a deficit (between making up the losses from 2011 and giving out all the vouchers) and, if that is the case, it may well take them another couple of years to sort their finances out. When they decided in 2011 to keep the festival going they would have had to put together at least a 5 year budget plan. I'm sure there's people on here who can explain this in much more detail than me but the basic principle is that they would have aimed to claw back a bit each year, which would still allow them to put on decent (if not spectacular) line ups.

However, if they book U2 then you can well and truly throw my theory out the window!!

And U2 don't pay tax, so you'd probably get them a bit cheaper.

. Brilliant!

I saw u2 at Glastonbury and thought they were amazing, was surprised at the cruddy reviews afterwards. The sound of straws being clutched is audible on this board, I think Semprini is right in that they are still recovering from the past few years. Also I think many of the regulars on this board are...... of a certain age (myself included) and the festival is targeting a younger demographic. There seems a distant lack of bands with a strong back catalogue to appeal to an older crowd.

That said there's still a lot of names to come, keep the faith....Bon Jovi anybody?!
