Still didn't understand what meatspace was, but good description of operant conditioning in action, with accurate reference to primary and secondary schedules of reinforcement.

Its the "real world" as opposed to online/computer worlds, its from Cyber Punk books/games/movies etc :P

Ah thank you, it's obvious once you know :D

It's a sore point, actually. I once did an online simulation of a spatial awareness test given to rats. They learn the route round a maze, then they can accurately find their way when the maze is simply reversed.

I have limited spatial awareness, and probably took longer in the reversal scenario.

(You can always tell when you've totally screwed up, when someone feels the need to tell you not to worry, you're doing fine :( )

I'm rubbish in meatspace too - I recently went for a meal with some former colleagues, in a familiar pub, which we entered from the opposite door to the one I usually used. I went to the loo, fixed in my head that we were sitting 'top right' but had no point of reference to pinpoint that direction.

They saw me wandering around in a confused state and rescued me. (It's a very small pub).

I was 100% sober, as well.

So, seriously outperformed by a rat as regards spatial intelligence :(

LOL.

OK. I've attended a few (Business) Psychology classes in my time.

But.

Can you.

Explain that like I am five?

Not sure if you're joking, but...

Primary reinforcers are those that fulfil basic needs (Maslow, you might have covered? - food, shelter etc.)

Secondary reinforcers are associated with basic needs - status, money, social approval (smiles, praise etc) so more abstract.

primary reinforcers, therefore, tend to involve instant gratification, and secondary reinforcers are either delayed or more abstract.

(you need money to provide food and shelter, you need group security for protection etc).

That's why, for example, slimmers are advised to look at why they eat, and substitute a different reward (reinforcer).

Instant gratification (primary reinforcement) is more powerful than secondary reinforcement, even if the gains would be greater (chocolate over better health, because you get an immediate feelgood from the chocolate)

Reinforcer = anything that causes a behaviour to be repeated.

Dogdyke (vb.)

Of dog-owners, to adopt the absurd pretence that the animal shitting in the gutter is nothing to do with them.

Well I was very tempted to pretend that the daughter who had just pulled a trolley into a tower of bottles of booze wasn't anything to do with me.

Bad. She was pulling it behind her without looking, and the tower toppled over and most bottles smashed. I had actually started making my getaway before my mother-brain reluctantly woke up :O

They didn't make us pay, I might have argued about public safety if they had. They said it was OK through gritted teeth.

 I can't say that my first reactions wouldn't be the same under similar circumstances.

That was fortunate that they didn't make you pay. I don't suppose I'd have seen the funny side had I been the shop keeper though. Mind you, if it's a successful shop, then it must be nice having people continually come in and pay for soemthing which you paid less for. I guess it's OK taking a few knocks if that's the case.

Source - where something comes from or begins.

A lesson in reading the small print. I had an eggs and bacon fry up to start today and poured on some HP Sauce. Looking at the label for the source of the sauce, it's now made in Holland.

HP was acquired by Heinz who demolished the old factory in Birmingham and moved production to their sauce making centre in Holland. The old site is now a hotel.

Yep, there was a bit of a protest in the city about that manouvre;

These people made the effort at the time. I now wish that I, and many others, had joined them. I may be wrong, but I believe the loss was felt by everyone in Birmingham at the time.
