Lineup 2016

Isn't that first bit just true with people you knew from college that went and stuff? I think most people I know that went but don't go anymore are the types that were going to get drunk and see the headliners, and now instead they get dressed up and go to the races to get drunk. When it comes to people I know who like music; Leeds isn't exactly high on the list in terms of appeal because the higher up acts are usually quite shit but they still find plenty of the acts interesting.

I'm quite the same and I'd only really consider a day ticket now (since they slashed the prices) but a day has yet to get me in. The day with Nas, Mastodon, King Gizz, Paak, etc. is really tempting but I think I'd just be depressed watching RHCP now so I probably won't go.

Yeah that's what I mean. They went to Leeds as it was trendy (mostly to do drugs and go to the dance tent) but now they go to Parklife because, as you say, that's a bigger deal for young people now.

Yeah I was thinking similar about the RHCP day for the same acts you mention but I'm at a wedding that day though so it's a non starter (and also revoltingly bankrupt).

Does anyone think the NME/Radio 1 tent might be bigger this year. I've been to Latitude festival the last two years, another Festival Republic festival Melvin Benn is very vocal about and the second stage/tent had increased dramatically this year compared to last year.

Last year at Latitude you could hardly get into the tent if you arrived during a set, the entrances were very small, this year however the festival was definitely using one of the old John Peel style tents, much larger with tall entrances, even during the headliners it didn't feel squashed, lots of space near the back.

The main stage used at Latitude is the one that's taken to Reading to use so hopefully they'll upgrade the NME tent for both sites.

Frankly, Reading has had very little competition from the other major UK festivals this year; Isle of Wight sold horrendously and V have decided to fully embrace their own separate demographic

If you live in the south of England, couldn't get a Glastonbury ticket and want to see big bands in a field then Reading is really your only option this summer

On the other hand the competition/headliner sharing with T coupled with the expansion of Kendal Calling and Y-Not might mean Leeds is a bit of a different story

The issue I find with Kendall and Y Not....I know they are much cheaper, is that there is a couple of acts each day but that's your lot. That being personal opinion. Kendall downfall is it's weekend only, but We Are Scientists into Catfish is bloody great.

The one at Reading is already the biggest in europe

There is a fair bit I'd see over the weekend however as my taste has changed I generally have less interest in the acts higher up the bill and have also in all probability already seen them

The fact that I've been regularly going to gigs for a good few years and am now seeing acts I caught in clubs rocket to the top of line ups probably negatively affects my perception of value as well

The demographic has also slowly evolved with less interest being taken in big established acts on the undercard which are traditionally more expensive to catch on their own in comparison to hype acts, which I personally believe makes for a line up that is less value for money in real terms

Of course you had the years headlined by Razorlight, The Darkness, etc. however people tend to forget that tickets were significantly cheaper back then (weekend tickets with camping in 2007 were £145) so I think as a whole you were still getting more for what you paid

The slashing of day ticket prices is a definite step in the right direction and could possibly tempt me back one year, however I could never see myself paying £220 and going for a weekend again, however as I stated above for the foreseeable future there will be a market of 90,000 or so kids wanting to see music in a big field in the south of England who are happy to part with that kind of cash

The issue with Leeds and T is that the customer base is generally less affluent than in the south of England and the major festival market is unable to sustain itself when there are affordable, viable alternatives. The solution to that would be to make the events more affordable, however that would also entail major artists having to accept reduced fees, which they will in all likelihood refuse to do. So instead, the major festival market in the North and Scotland will collapse.

The 1975 playing that tent at Leeds is an astonishing move. It will be horrendously busy.

Crazy ! I remember years ago that the Leeds tent was massive, remember being near the secondary barrier for Hadouken and Pendulum in 2008

The last time they played the NME in 2014 was far and away the busiest I've ever seen that tent, so god knows what it will be like this year.

Wait? The tent is smaller at leeds?!

yeah, they reduced the size of it last year, remains to be seen if it will remain the same size.

Parklife as well. That seems to be a much bigger, trendier deal than Leeds for young people up north, I reckon.

see, from my experience of it I don't know anyone who has chosen Parklife over Leeds, I know plenty of people who have chosen to go both and also people who have attended Parklife but are likely to have never attended Leeds in the first place anyway. Attracts a lot of people who have gone for the techno, pills and Instagram uploads- not that Leeds doesn't attract it's fair share of that. Point being if you wanted to go to Leeds for any other reason than the Dance Stage or Relentless then I don't think Parklife would have much chance in pulling you away from it.

This year and the previous two, I've seen the lineup, thought it was shit, said there was no way I was going, and then just bought a ticket and gone. What it comes down to for me is, yes the lineup is disappointing but the alternative is to go to no festival at the end of the summer so I just suck it up and go as my mates are going.

To be fair, there are still some very good days, I think. Libertines, Kendrick, Jamie T, The Cribs and The Gaslight Anthem in the same day is great. Chilis, Nas, Courteeners, EODM, Slaves and Blossoms is pretty solid for me too this year (although Nas now looks likely to clash with Chilis now Haim have pulled out).

Worth noting though that I haven't paid full price for a ticket. Worked some magic with Ticketmaster vouchers I found online and paid £160 this time, and just £115 for last year (but that was the lineup was worth tops with that God awful Mumfords day). I wouldn't pay the same price as a Glastonbury ticket just on principle. Actually, if you pay for Wednesday entry, full price at Leeds would cost more than Glastonbury, which is insane.

Leeds has seemed pretty busy when I've gone. Haven't really been any embarrassingly low crowds I've seen, and the campsite is always full...can't see it disappearing in the next few years really?

Ta. Has the Jack Rocks stage been there before? I recall that they had a stage at this year's IOW and it had a bunch of up and coming rock bands on there and Yak headlined it. Might be something to check out though it seems really close to the main stage.

BBC Intro announced at 10 by the way, if anyone is interested.

I know peeps were hoping Good Charlotte wouldn't clash with the first coheadliner but it looks likely that'll happen now as there seems to be too many acts on the Lock Up for it not to happen. The Futuresound winners, Fighting Caravans, are opening the Lock Up for whatever reason instead of the advertised FR slot prize. They're not a punk band either. Weird. Oh well.

Have they been announced as playing Reading too? The way that it was worded on Twitter made it sound like they were just at Leeds. Not in anyway bothered about them of course, just wondering if it will be a different band (or hopefully) no band at Reading.

Are you crazy? I went to truck this year (who's lineup is very similar to Kendall and Y Not's) and we saw a good 6/7 acts per day all of whom we're excellent.

Also the Y Not saturday lineup is incredible - You have Catfish, Band of Skulls, Circa Waves, Moose Blood, The Sherlocks, Sundara Karma, Neck Deep, Eliza and the Bear - A great deal more than a couple of acts...

That again though depends what you like, maybe I should have phrased it but that's my lot. All those others you mentioned don't bother me in the slightest.
