Weather thread 2015

I totally agree but the two websites I could find that gave historical rainfall amounts for 2011 gave 9mm and 11mm.

Some possible explanations I can think of are:

  • 2009's rain was in one big storm whereas 2011 was spread out,
  • there was a lot of rain before 2011 so the ground very quickly turned to mud,
  • this is rainfall recorded in Yeovilton not Worthy Farm,
  • the figures are a complete load of bollocks

A lot of the rain around this time of year is from very localised showers and yeovilton must be a good 10-15 miles away as the crow flies. So I wouldnt put much trust in their rain figures for the festival.

Is it only me that doesn't really remember years 08,09,11 and 13's weather very well?!

2010 obviously sticks out in my mind as does last year due to the mental storm.

The other years above though I'm very hazy over.

As far as I remember 2008, 2009 and 2013 had rain on one evening but that was about it. 2011 was showers wednesday to friday (+ loads of rain in the weeks running up to the festival)

Okay, I'll keep them on the graph just because they are the best we can manage.

I remember 13 pretty well - apart from the rain on Thursday night, the rest of the weekend was pretty much perfect. The wellies stayed in the tent from about 1pm Friday.

I completely agree with the rest of those years though. Those festival seem to blur into one - and not just in terms of weather!

They do become more hazy as years tock by and extremes stand out like 05, 07 and 10 but I remember 11 pretty well still..............i think

Pissing on arrival and set up.............then grand until Friday and it was horrible for the Friday night. The Sat and Sun were fine.

There was a mad thunder episode in 08/09 on the Thurs I think but I can not pin it down. Just rememeber walking through Dance looking for DJ Yoda and the lightning was unreal....................the more I think of it the more I think it was 08, as didnt MJ die on the Thurs in 09 and we were sitting about a campfire when that came through and it was pleasant enough.............

My possible explanation -

As well as the Friday Night rain, 2009 did have a second storm with a huge amount of rainfall that's often forgotten as it didn't impact people much - it started hammering it down at about 1am on Sunday Night / Monday Morning and lasted about 3-4 hours.

I believe there was also more later in the day on Monday after most people left site so I don't know whether that's included within the date range or not.

'11 only had two days of rain but it was rain which fell at the wrong time/s.

I arrived on the Thursday and it was great, but because of the rainfall on the Weds the site was a bit muddy. Then just as it started to recover it rained consistently throughout Friday. Saturday was sunny but muddy conditions, Sunday was sunny and the ground started to recover and dry up.

yep.

I remember it was wellies all day every day that year. The Pyramid field was fine by Sunday but the Other field was still churned up and muddy. I remember sinking in to the ground whilst watching QOTSA!

@ ThomThomDrum, both 08 and 09 had quite intense storms on the Thursday night, 09 was the a bit heavier rain but it didn't really last very long and had some spectacular lightning. 08 was still quite heavy and there may have been some thunder but I can't quite remember.

Nope, I only know what the weather was like from reading this thread. I'd forgotten about the storm last year as well tbh, we just stayed in the tent, had some sex and a nap I think. I don't even remember seeing it rain.

UK Outlook for Saturday 20 Jun 2015 to Saturday 4 Jul 2015:

Current signals suggest that high pressure will give a good deal of fine and warm weather, especially across southern, central and eastern areas. However, in these areas, building humidity may give the threat of localised thunderstorms from time to time. Further north and west, the weather is likely to be cooler and more changeable with occasional rain. Temperatures are expected to range from near normal in the northwest to above average in the southeast

Its defo 08 Im thinking of now. Looked it up and Yoda was playing the Slient World on the Thurs. It pissed rain and the lightning we saw was unreal. Think it may have hit something on site

As for 09.............Im really hazy on that one but I am 100% sure we were sitting about a campfire happy enough when we found out MJ pop his clogs. God may have cried thereafter and opened the heavens but I have no memory of that for some reason................(I wonder what that reason is? Hmmm ;) )

2008 was quite sunny after a tiny bit of rain early on. 2009 was pretty dingy with sunday being quite wet if i remember rightly, so 12mm seems quite low.

BTW sources might disagree/clash on the terminology of rainfall/precipitation. Its quite possible for a dry festival to have precipitation of 10mm+ due to morning dew/condensation. you wouldn't notice if you woke up and there had been 1-2mm of dew other than the grass being slightly damp!

But dew would not collect and register in a rain gauge would it?? So it cant/should not be recorded as precipitation??

My recollection of recent years I've attended.

2009 - Blazing heatwave conditions Wed and Thurs, thunderstorm about 6 with some light showers in the evening. Rain started again overnight and continued til midday Friday. Blazing heatwave conditions returned until Sunday 1am, when it rained lightly on and off til dawn.

2010 - No rain, first drops seen in Bristol late monday afternoon.

2011 - Heavy rain in the 3 weeks before the festival waterlogged the site. Pattern was rain overnight and morning, then warmer days. Pissed down on the queue Wed morning, site was mushed up by new arrivals. Wed, some overnight rain and Thursday was pleasant, Thurs, overnight showers. Friday, started raining lightly late afternoon, pissing down all night from about 10pm then dry and hot until lunchtime monday saw light showers.

2013 - Dry and mild in the run up, Thursday rain came early evening, stopped raining about midnight. Dry for the rest of the festival.

If its the same temperature as the floor/roof then yes it would. Dew is definitely precipitation, the only difference is where in the atmosphere its formed.

2009 was fine other than the thuderstorm when Michael Jackson died.

The Sunday rain didn't come until about 1 in the morning. That doesn't really count.

It did if you were up in the Stone Circle in shorts and a tshirt wearing no socks when it started and your tent is in Michaels Mead.

The only Glastonbury that was effected by the worse by the weather for me was 2010.

2009 was hot, but not as bad or constant as 2010.

2010 - the least enjoyable one for me, due to the heat, but I still enjoyed it (obviously)

2011 was generally ok for me, but the friday night was shit.

2014 was the best of the bunch weather wise for me

I think you're right, i forgot about the final downpour in 2009 it was pretty heavy.

Excellent summarising from Spindles, bang on about U2 too, that was just horrible.

My time-honoured way to appease the Weather Gods is to plan for 2007, pray for 20103

Fixed that for you - but otherwise bang on.

2010 was too wearing - I'm all for no rain at all, but not with those temperatures. 2013 was pretty much the perfect festival, lets face it avoiding rain for five+ days is so unlikely if it's gonna happen let it be like that

2013 would just be a bit warmer on the Sunday. Was very cloudy and chilly that day/evening.
