Weather thread 2015

I often find even when the festival is happening a lot of news coverage seems to be filmed in the worst possible conditions and in the worst possible areas for mud too... Ignoring the people lounging around in the sun at other times/areas.

I've heard tell of one major news organisation scrapping their plans to present the weather from the site at the 11th hour in the past, when they realised it wasn't going to be muddy. No 'story' without the mud...

Monday 22 June—Sunday 5 July A very British summer

Towards the end of June and into the start of July it looks as though we're going to see an area of high pressure moving towards the UK from the Azores but struggling against the chilly northwesterly weather pattern of the previous week. What this means in terms of the weather we can expect is a bit of a northwest-southeast split. In the north and west the weather is likely to be unsettled with showers and longer spells of rain and strong winds at times too. Temperatures are looking like being below average too. In the south and east the weather will be more settled with longer sunny periods with lighter winds but still turning chilly by night. All parts will see at least some rain or at least showers, but the focus for this type of weather will be northern and western Scotland, Northern Ireland and northwest England. The best of the drier and brighter weather will be found in eastern and southern Scotland, Wales and eastern and southern England with the highest temperatures likely in the southeast of England.

In 2010 there was a photographer taking pictures of a muddy little puddle that had formed near some taps. I asked him why he wasn't taking pictures of everyone sat in the sun and how brilliant it was.

He said he had been but if he went back to the office without some kind of standing water shot his boss wouldn't be happy.

All nice and friendly but it just makes me think of their "narrative." Utter sheep.

pedmills, on that Excel sheet you had a few days back, are there more forecasts (i.e. more websites) involved now? Cheers for today's graph!

Also, more generally, what was 2008 like? V. low on the rainfall but I can't remember people raving about the conditions on here. Only started going in 2010 myself.

2008 was my first year and it was pretty glorious to be honest. If I recall a sprinkle when pitching up on the weds but nothing to cause much mud etc. A close second to 2010 (and I'm sure many of the photophobes on here would claim it was easier to cope with).

2008 is a weird one for me. I genuinely can only remember two things that happened: I got robbed on the Wednesday night, and on Saturday I saw Massive Attack. I can't recall anything else, including the weather. It must have been ok (neither really good nor really bad) otherwise I surely would remember it.

Getting robbed was shit, but Massive Attack were excellent.

Having survived that (without a coat) I figure there isnt much festivals can throw at me. Although having said that if such a situation happened again I would probably give up going to festivals in this country.

I got totally and utterly Gillespie'd on the Thursday night when the rain first fell. I lost 2 T-Shirts and a jumper, and ended up insanely muddy after letting some girl go on my shoulders at Picadilly.

2008 = very hot and sunny from the Wednesday to te Thursday evening, then as the sun went down an bit of a storm that lasted for a couple of hours, Friday morning was a little Gray and drizzly but by about 5pm on the sun had come out and then Saturday Sunday Monday where all lovely warm and sunny. Very simlar to 2009 but without the Sunday night downpour.

2009 was much more cloudy and humid in general though, so it always felt like it could rain. 2008 had much more in the way of clear skies

Thursday evening was bloody freezing! Rest of the weekend was glorious after the drizzle and cloud cleared on Friday. By Saturday lunchtime I was in trainers again.

2009 was much more cloudy and humid in general though, so it always felt like it could rain. 2008 had much more in the way of clear skies

2009 was glorious on Wednesday and Thursday until the afternoon then there were a few pretty significant showers that continued overnight and into the morning making the Friday much muddier. Rest of the weekend was great though, the ground just took a little longer to dry out

I guess it depends whether Somerset will get the South weather or the West weather!

Also, looking at the tabloids there is a definite theme. It's all "phew, what a scorcher" so they can use pictures of girls sunbathing, or kids playing in a fountain. But any big event will be a washout. There is no way they would even consider saying "summer will be a washout, but Glastonbury and Wimbledon will sizzle". Just doesn't make a good story.
