I like visiting London, but that's it. However, I can still see why it attracts people from near and far. There's an awful lot to see and do, and a swath of new people to meet. To an outsider like me it appears very vibrant. I'm guessing that might be appealing. However, if you do come over then make sure you visit places outside of London as well, otherwise you'll have missed out on the 'flavour' of this country.

Wishing you all the best whatever path you choose.

This, although I'd also say that most of the larger cities seem vibrant to me, having spent a fair whack of my life in Oxford, which is pretty but boring.

I stayed with a friend in London for a bit shy of 2 months while looking for a job anywhere in the country a few years ago, and the cost of living and amount of transport time put me off staying, but there are a lot of great things about the city.

I think a lot of people praise their own city to reaffirm their own choices. I love bristol and an delighted to be moving back again, but others will look for different things. London has really big disadvantages, but at the same time, it has probably nearly as much going on add the rest of the country put together. I'm happy visiting, others would prefer to live there.

I've learnt several things from this thread in particular the city rivalry and disdain of London, largely due to accommodation prices that seems to exist from most people on the board.

Not to get boringly back on topic, but I largely want to move there because I'm sick of my current city Auckland, have friends over in London, and seems as good an overseas city as any to move to. Auckland's pretty expensive so I'm sure I'll adjust to the punishment of London rent prices. Or find a place like Woolwich to live in.

i'm pretty much in the exact same boat as you and probably moving this year. The way I look at it is that I don't really give too much of a toss about the city, but I'd be around a good bunch pretty much all the time. In a 'Not where you're going, who you're going with' kind of way.

'orses for courses an' all that. I think it creates a more 'neighbourly' environment.

And I realise that 'neighbourly' and 'London' in the same sentence might feel like an oxymoron, but there are pockets of friendliness here. ;)

Yeah, its not the most welcoming place and you do need to look for the friendliness but it is here.

People outside of London do like to moan about London being expensive and getting a disproportionate amount of attention/funding from the govt, but its also among the most deprived areas in the country.

I read a stat the other day. I think it was 30% of people in London are reliant on benefits for more than 50% of their income. Looking at the rents and house prices that doesn't surprise me.
