Any ideas on keeping belongings safe (and dry)?

Agreed about the lock ups.

If your tent is dry other things inside should stay dry. Or store them in a rucksack.

If you're worried about tent safety one of the best things is to make friends with your neighbours. You keep an eye out for strangers around their tents and they do the same for you.

If it were to rain (which it wont) on your way in to the festival it's an idea to have your clothes in a few seperate plastic bags within your rucksack so that they don't get wet and you have dry clothes for the rest of the festival.

As has has been said, store any valuables in the free lock ups and just take them out of there when you need them. I never used to do this but now always put my money in an envelope in to the lock ups and just take out what I need for that day / night. The rest remains well safe in the lock ups. I have even stored my important 'medication' in there for the last two years.

The lockups are great and free (but I recommend a donation to their charity). A tip is to book your stuff in batches, as you can't take out part of your stash on the one ticket, then photograph your tickets in case you lose the paper. If you look on last year's map, you'll see the lockups' locations.

Another tip for a first time camper. Spend a good bit of time making sure that your tent is well set up. Don't rush it so that you can get into the fest asap. Spend time making sure all the pegs and the groundsheet are secure and the guy ropes are taut.

It will be your home for the best part of a week so sort out your bedrooms and clothes, storing things away neatly and inflating your air bed (if you have one) and laying out your sleeping bag. A sleeping bag lining is also well worth the investment.

You don't want to be trying to re-erect or sort out your tent when you get back in the dark.

Thank you

So re the lock ups, do I need to book in advance? and when I get one is it mine for the whole festival or do you take your stuff out daily and then get a new lockup?

Thanks for the tent advice, I may need to set up a new question just to talk about tents, i.e. one with pegs on that just 'pops up'. So much think about!

I'm sure it will all be worth it though!

Liking your name- I'm a Northern Southerner too (assuming I've got that the right way round ha!). The lock ups are more of a manned tent than actual lockers. You can leave your stuff there for the whole festival or come and get things as and when you please. I used the lock ups for beer, my festival cart and small items like money and car keys. I went and got money out every day but left some things there for the duration of the festival. I left a note as a donation at the end of the festival. It's fully staffed 24 hours too- really good set up :D

Yeah so as Ali says the lock ups (not lockers) are big marquees staffed by volunteers. You can leave anything from a trolley or bike to cash to beer. You fill in a ticket when you deposit things, you get a ticket back to keep hold of (don't lose it, although there are procedures if you do). When you want to get something out, then hand your ticket over and hey presto your stuff gets delivered! It's dead straightforward, really really secure and free (donations appreciated). It's really a no brainer if you've got anything of any value at all. Most folk don't go to the trouble of handing the contents of their tent each day but loads of people use them across site to, for example, put clothes in for later.

Your tent should keep you dry, just remember to zip it up properly!

Take a photo on your phone of your lock up ticket in case you lose it. We keep most things in the lock ups including our heavy ra*n coats and trolly. We always try and camp near one if poss as well, as it's a good landmark for your tent as well as being handy.

Could not agree more with the lock-ups, think of it as a bank in a way, storing money if you don't fancy carrying it around all day or leaving it scattered around your tent. We also stored our passports and return boat / train tickets home and anything else of value.

Also they have the Challenge 21 wristbands if you're unfortunate enough to be over the age but still babyfaced (like myself)

Take a roll of bin bags with you too - if the worst happens and your tent leaks you can use them to protect your stuff (and, as others have said, they can also be sat on if the ground is damp, used as a temporary poncho, or, you know, for rubbish)
