So, what have we got, what have we not?

What I'm more interested in knowing is why there's now threads entitled 'What have we got, what have we not', 'Line-up - who's missing' and 'How many more?' started in the past day. SO UNNCECESSARY.

It's all part of the obsessive experience. Relax.

Thanks, guys

Yes, I guess I knew all that, really! I'm just trying to get my head around the enormity of what I don't yet know in terms of line-up. As I said, unlike maybe your casual GF goer, I know unequivocally that there is more for me in what hasn't yet been announced than in what has!

Ben

Ben, can I just say what a fucking great addition you've been to this forum. You joy is a fucking great thing and stopping cynical old bastards like me from throwing in the towel. Thanks man. I mean it.

Don't forget that even after the full line-up is announced there's still more in the bars etc. which only get advertised on the blackboards each day. Each time I've been I've managed to find a new favourite when I've just stopped somewhere to have a quiet pint.

Oh and Ben, I agree with Mardy's comments above. Though I do wonder whether you actually get anything done in the real world anymore! :)

F*ck me, you lot, I'm an emotional bugger, what are you trying to do to me?!

Mardy - I feel (genuinely) quite honoured. I never fail to chuckle at your poignant, ascerbic posts! You are as brief and focused as I am rambling. I'm pretty confident in interpreting your seeming curmudgeonliness as (at least, in part) tongue in cheek, and it's that aspect that makes your posts so funny. It doesn't hurt that when you proclaim something as sh*te, I usually agree with you! So, consider me humbled by your kind words.

General Lee - I'll answer this later, if I may. There's lots on the poster that I like, and lots of the self-confirmed and just logicaly-likely that excite me more - will post when home.

mandolin - this is how it works: For the last 8-9 years I have been to a festival every year. I'm married and have three kids (now teenagers) and so I only ever feel that I can justify the indulgence of one festival per year. That festival has become my favourite period of the year, bar none. I sometimes feel a little guilty about saying that - why would a time without my family (who mean everything to me) be 'better' than times with them? It's not like that. It's just that those 4-5 days give me the time and space to have to worry about no-one but myself (and my fellow festival goers). It's the one, genuine, ahem, 'me-time' in my year. I love music beyond all other non-family interests. It is important to me in ways that I can sometimes not articulate. I don't drink, smoke or do drugs. Except at my festival, where I smoke both regular and jazz cigs almost continually. I get to talk music bollocks with 1000s of people who do not exist in my normal life. I love doing this SOOOO much.

As such, I tend to create a somewhat disproportionate obsession with my annual festival. I will be ridiculously active on the forum of whichever festival I'm going to, and become one of the better known posters on there, in the lead-up to the event, because I have uncontrollable toddler levels of excitement! So, last year I was all over the Green Man forum, the year before Latitude etc. This year will be my first Glastonbury. I have long told myself that Glastonbury was not for me because, despite my love for festivals, as described, GF was too big, too mainstream, I'd never get to see the 43 band sets that I saw at Green man last year etc etc. I'm not quite sure what it was that, last autumn, made me, suddenley, convinced that now, the time was right for me to go. but I knew instantly that I just had to go.

As a result, this forum has been a revelation, as it has introduced me to, and reassured me of the existence of, so many people for whom getting away from the world for 4-5 days, in this kind of environment, was such a big part of their lives. I have acknowledged, and am at peace with, the fact that GF will be very different for me, compared to my previous festivals; that I will, this time, pick a few bands to see that I can sensibly, logistically get to see, and then I will, truthfully, let the rest of the festival happen 'to me' in whatever form and way that it sees fit!

Why am I being self-indulgent and telling you all this? I dunno. Maybe it's just because after you saying nice things about me, I felt the need to articulate just why I am so excited about the festival. My favourite part is always that moment when you (the coach, this year) round that final corner and some of the tents. flags, structures first come into view. That instant of anticipation of how wonderful the next 4-5 days will be. I wrote to SeeCoaches to ask them to put me on the first coach if they could, as I didn't want to miss one minute of the festival that I didn't have to. they sent me a lovely reply, and my coach and 'seat' number for the Birmingham GF coaches is 1-1 at 0545h! I almost wet myself.

Anyway, enough self-centred crap. I am still not certain about the eFests meet. For two reasons: (1) a misguided worry that if I go, I could be missing seeing even more of the site on Wednesday (!) and (2) although I'm a very fun, bouncy enthusiast, I'm not brilliant at those first few ice-break minutes. Maybe what I need is to agree to meet a specific person there, get chatting, and then gradually meet more and more.

Apologies if this seems like insufferable sixth-form writing (I am 46!). I am, as you can tell, more excited than I can possibly tell you.

Cheers Andeeroo for that list, brilliant to see.

And cheers Ben for that - post of the year! Except for the bit about not going to the meet, which you really should do. I only went for the first time last year, it was great, really relaxed. Meeting a few people from here in the flesh just as the festival is getting underway is the perfect culmination of a year of Glastobating!

Hi Ben, what a great post! I'm 53, been going since 2009 and it still has this same effect on me. I was never a festival goer but a mad music fan and had always looked on at the TV wanting to go. I made the effort and never looked back. Though I have never been to other festivals I can't see as I would want to go to any other main festival now that I am soaked in the history of Glastonbury through the media and my 5 years of experiencing it. I would however go to a smaller one but only should I be unlucky in not getting a ticket for Glastonbury, like you I have to many responsibilities to do more than that. I love your enthusiasm , and I am really looking forward to reading your posts after the festival to get your take on what I reckon wil be the best time of your life.

Oh and as Brave Sir Robin has said, go to the meet. It used to be by the Cider bus and I found it not very welcoming as you couldn't find anyone and I was as shy as fuck! But last year was really good, better organised and easy to talk to people, go for it!

What they're not saying Ben is virgins have to buy a round for all the efestival regulars at the meet. A man with 3 children, I thought you was a teenage techno tripper :)

Might even show my face at the meet this year, gone past it 7 years on the spin and never stopped. Unacquainted humans make me feel nervous, avatars, well you can pick and choose real easy.

Exactly, look for the flag, be greeted my grinning people, feel slightly ridiculous when you realise you have to introduce yourself with the somewhat daft user name you gave yourself many moons ago*, get a sticker and you will find people come to you.

*My favourite of these being while at Camp Ralph last year as people turned up and started asking who each other where. The look on one camper's face as he had to say, "Hi. I'm kickingsquealingguccilittlepiggy" was an absolute joy.

Great post Ben. You have a great way with words, which entirely sums up my feelings and excitement for this years events.

This year will be first Glastonbury since 2002, although i have been to many different festivals in the interim, so it is like going for the first time again and it has rapidly become an obsession! Which has included reading this forum every 30 minutes! I too have 2 young kids and i do worry about the selfishness of going without them and spending all the money associated...but i guess its OK to look after yourself once a year.

I hope you have a great time.

Who is it you're hoping to see Ben?

General Lee.

So, my little Confederate friend, response as promised. I'll list all the bands I would say in a hierarchal ranking, understanding that I could never hope to see a fraction of them, given the site's enormity!

(1) From Tuesday's announcement:

MUST SEES

Hot Chip

Courtney Barnett

WOULD INTEND TO GO SEE UNLESS...CLASHFINDER SAYS NO...

SFA, Jon Hopkins, Sharon Van Etten, Kate Tempest, Death Cab For Cutie, Caribou, Future Islands, Spiritualized, Jamie T, DFA 1979

WOULD BE HAPPY TO SEE

Circa Waves (really liking the record - surprised at the poor reviews elsewhere on the forum), Father John Misty, Jamie xx, alt-J, FKA twigs, Todd Terje, Belle & Sebastian, Chemicals

NOT TOO FUSSED, MAY BE UNEXPECTEDLY QUITE FUN AND I WOULDN'T ACTIVELY AVOID

Maccabees, Young Fathers, Motörhead, Waterboys, Run the Jewels

(2) From the (TBC) on eFests' list:

Alvvays, Gaz Coombes, Phuture, Fold (might be my first little golden nugget find), nadine Shah, the Little Unsaid, Trembling Bells

(3) Bands/Artists that logically may well be announced, that I would love to be there (i.e. a realistic [some less so] wish list):

Laura Marling, The Twilight Sad, Everything Everything, Stornaway, Villagers, The Leisure Society, East India Youth, 8.58 (Paul Hartnoll's project), Dredge, Lower Dens, Public Service Broadcasting, The Decemberists, Björk (alright, I know, I know...), Diagrams, GY!BE, The Haxan Cloak, Ben Frost, Kiasmos, AWVFTS (I wish!), The Antlers (PLEASE!)

There are loads of others I could name, obviously, but I'll end with Adult Jazz, because theirs was my AOTY for 2014 and they were bloody superb at Green Man.

Happy dissection of a bit of my musical taste...

I like how you sign all your messages Ben more than anything, tremendous decorum

It's something I've done on every post I've ever posted on any forum! It's not an affectation, just something I like to do, though I've had people have a pop at me about it before...usually those with an extensive, identical signature below every one of their posts!

You were almost there, whisty!

I am a massive fan of squelchy, sleepy, ideally vocal-free techno, and despite being 45 (got it wrong above, what a tit...that comes with age!), I'm pretty mega fit and love nothing more than 4-5 hours of dancing like a loon to said squelchy sleepy stuff every night at my festival. Again, this is something that, with the realities of 'normal' life, I can only do at my annual festival.

The Field and Luke Abbott played late, late on Saturday at last year's Green Man...with the bonus of some decent weed I was as close as I ever get to 'spiritual'!

Awww!

Well yes, but only occasional posts unless EOTR is my one festival that year, Hotcider!

I'm sure it will be sometime, as I love EOTR. But, I have a nagging feeling that once I've experienced Worthy Farm, my head may be turned good and proper!

We definitely have all three other headliners I reckon... too many strong acts

Deadmau5

Rudimental

Ben Howard

????

The Chemical Brothers

Jamie T

With the exception of possibly the Chems, they're not gonna bother me too much, Matt.

Only prob might be getting somewhere else sharpish after Jamie T, if he's defo subbing in that spot...
