Many people get through on 3G on their phones.

There is NO conspiracy or preference on connection speed. It literally comes down to total luck on the exact millisecond your request (F5) hits the SEE server and whether the packet gets through among the millions of hits they are getting at that same exact moment.

Servers can only handle so much data. Some has to be bounced back. This is why people spam F5 as much as they can, to increase their chances.

I always just assumed they had a list of all the devices in the queue and let random devices through as the bookings are complete.. I can't imagine F5 helping at all, just helps you get through 10 seconds faster if your device is lucky enough to be let through

Nah. IP traffic is IP traffic, first come first served. 6 IPs or 1 IP should make no difference at all, unless See have specifically written a rule into their fancy anti-attack system (which someone one posted some details about), tho I can't see any meaningful reason why they'd do that.

A sale is a sale to them, why should they care about the specifics of the IP address that brought the person to their website?

My brother is a senior systems analyst at a company that does traffic management systems, and I asked him how he'd handle the sort of traffic equivalent to a medium scale DoS attack, but keep the system fair. He said he'd cycle through IP addresses, which would limit the number of requests hitting the server at any one. For him it was a no brainer.

That's not to say the See do it this way of course but if they did, a range of IP addresses would be an advantage. Although to really exploit that you'd have to know how they cycled through the IPs.

If you're on that page which says it will refresh in so many seconds, but you can refresh manually, then it certainly helps.  Twice I succeeded on the browser I was pushing F5 on before the one which was just waiting to refresh.

I believe that's how it currently works for TicketMaster (in the Netherlands at least). A few minutes before the start of the sale, a waiting list is created and everyone who goes to the site is added to the waiting list. Then when the sale starts, the entire waiting list is shuffled into a new, random queue, giving everyone (or at least every device / IP) the same chance. Pressing F5 there would actually send you to the back of the queue.

However, that's not the system Seetickets use for Glastonbury. Here, the waiting page refreshes automatically every 20 seconds, or sooner if you press F5.
