Used to be a massive fan of Foals in their early days, but the two most recent albums are pretty bland. They did used to be one of the best live bands in the game, and were still one of the most memorable indie bands you could see on a festival main stage when I saw them for the last time in 2013.

Mr 2 hats sums it up for me - to me  they are hipster indie landfill along with Basille , 2 door cinema etc

and  his own band fit his words after the Brits

"The music industry's a bit like Crufts," complained Foals frontman Yannis Philippakis. "It's all about hairstyles and who's got the best training and pedigree."

"In guitar music, it definitely feels like there's been a brain drain. There's a lot of [bands] dressing up in parents' clothes and acting out pastiche-like tropes. I'd like to see a return of edgy, unpredictable, wild guitar music."

I am open to be 'converted' IF they are edgier live .

How in the name of all things good and pure are Bastille and TDCC in any way hipster?

Anyway for me Foals are a good band. Not life-changing but good. Someone I'd be really happy to see at a festival but wouldn't ever pay for one of their own gigs.

You definitely don't know what a hipster is if those are your examples of hipster bands - two of the most mainstream/poppy bands out there.

Foals also don't look like they dress in their parents' clothes.

the key words were 'to me'  and they are popular bands who are hip.

they look like identi-kit hipster bands so I said hipster.  when any of them (and others) come on the radio they all sound similar and interchangeable (To me).  I don't dislike them - I don't like them they are just meh.

I did like one of theirs when I youtubed them but others were just meh -I shall you-tube some live stuff as others saythey are better live (others said they arent)

All subjective anyway.

How so?  Do you think it all just vanished overnight?

Not overnight but the media stopped trying to build up 'the new White Stripes/Strokes/Libertines' six times a day and things look a lot different as a result. It's just an outdated term to try and dismiss a band really - it obviously gets levelled at the ones that remained from the 2000's (eg. Foals, Maccabees, Cribs) a lot but the fact they remain and in some cases are still growing is testament to them not being as throwaway as the term accuses.

I've just remembered that I thought not-very-much to the last time they did Glastonbury. Tented festival sets look (and were) a much better live show but I guess if you wanna represent them now then you're right on with that one.

Can someone tell me what a hipster actually is? I got called a hipster because I play vinyl, which is a bit ironic as I have never been hip in my entire life.

I thought it was someone who goes well out of their way to be different.

yeah last time i saw them live was Glastonbury 2010 in the JP tent when they were incredible. found the idea of them moving to outdoor stages weird at first but guess it had to happen eventually. do think their Pyramid set will be a good one though, and i'm glad they're playing as it'll be the last time i see them live (at least for a while, until they're headlining outright, whenever that may be)

I have no idea mate then what one is. I got asked by a lad at my mums work which controller did I use or do I still use cdj's? (My mum had told him I used to do a bit of djing years ago). When I said I used vinyl, he said "Only hipsters use vinyl"

Because vinyl is no longer the format the majority of djs use now?

I could maybe understand that if I was a 20 something or teenager. It is not like I had gone right out of my way to be different as the 30 somethings had no other option. It was said in a condescending tone as well, as if being a hipster was not a good thing to be.

was watching videos of them playing Glastonbury in 2008. i'm so glad Yannis has learned to sing live somewhat - his yelpy voice of old grew tiresome very fast

yeah I was a fan of Foals in the early days and saw them a number of times around the release of their first album and they weren't that good really. They've improved massively. I last saw them a few months ago and they absolutely tore the place up. They're one of the best live bands going at the moment.

also if we're doing videos this is mega
