dentalplan
Flo is classed as "indie rock" too apparently. Yeah. Well she is, but I knew people would be more willing to argue against that than Arcade Fire.
russycarps
There are women in Arcade Fire that headlined without being 'frothy pop shit'. mr gumby
I think it would be a great idea to have a 'ladies day' on the Pyramid. Not every year, as that would increase the perception of female artists as a 'novelty', but as a one-off to highlight the inequality issue. Maybe on a Sunday, so it could include the legend slot. Kate Bush Suzanne Vega Courtney Barnett Carole King Jenny Lewis Tracy Chapman The Staves Lucy Rose That'd do me!
Zoo Music Girl
As a lady I would find the concept of ladies day very patronising actually. Would you have a "black music day"? A "gay music day"?
billum
Kate Bush Suzanne Vega Courtney Barnett Carole King Jenny Lewis Tracy Chapman The Staves Lucy Rose That'd do me! Great list! I'd just add Janelle Monáe, Kristina Train, St Vincent, Anna Calvi, Honeyblood, The Veronicas and Gemma Hayes and I'd be very happy watching that lot for the whole weekend... A "gay music day"? No, of course not. I'm only suggesting it could be done as a one-off, to highlight the issue, and I'm sure glasto would make their reasons clear if they did do it. Of course, what's really needed is a shift in attitude within the music industry, but glasto's media coverage could help make people think about it. Festival Liam
I love Courtney Barnett but she ain't never playing third down on the Pyramid ... or hopefully that stage again. Ladies day is also a tad patronising. If you took all the "ladies" playing on this years Pyramid (where a "lady" is the main performer, lead of the band or ladies make up the majority of the band): 22:15 - 23:45 FLORENCE + THE MACHINE 20:00 - 21:15 PALOMA FAITH 18:30 - 19:30 MARY J. BLIGE 16:45 - 17:45 ALABAMA SHAKES 16:00 - 17:15 PATTI SMITH 13:30 - 14:30 COURTNEY BARNETT 11:00 - 11:45 THE UNTHANKS WITH CHARLES HAZLEWOOD & HIS ORCHESTRA With their original times, all you're really missing is one act from a full day of 8 acts. Slot missing is probably thesub headliner, although Paloma could do it at a push. Much better to just ensure "ladies" are represented fairly across the board. That includes headliners of course, which is probably the main slot where they struggle.
mr gumby
Ok, I accept the phrase 'ladies day' was a poor choice on my part, I didn't mean it to sound patronising, and sorry if it did. Glasto are certainly better than some large festivals in their mix of artists. I just think they're in a good position to push the message. russycarps
the solution as ever is to ensure girls have the same opportunity and encouragement as boys at a young age and beyond, rather than shoehorning current shit acts into inappropriate slots. dentalplan
Yeh, bowie had a bassist who sung one of the songs too I suppose. I guess there's no problem then! Well of course there are well documented problems with the opportunities for women in music and on festival line ups but to consider being a 'female artist' to only encompass being the name/lead singer/focal point of the band rather than everything else is a bit daft ain't it? thewayiam
I think Coldplay are the most likely headliner for next year too. Seem to play every couple of albums and they'll definitely be touring by next summer given the album apparently comes out this year. If you're going by Coldplay and it'll be next year if it happens then I'd go FM and Foo's based on that. I'd rather Biffy over Coldplay mind. Flo, Beyonce, Skunk Anansie, Shakespears Sister, Sinead O'Connor and Suzanne Vega. Would've been 7 if Kylie didn't get sick. dentalplan
I dunno, there have been loads of solo males headline but only 1 woman. I'd disagree that Arcade fire headlining was a triumph for women. Haven't most of the solo males headlining been stars from the 60's/70's? Plus it's not like there's a host of decent solo male artists queued up to headline festivals. Sam Smith and Ed Sheeran? A bit further down the road; James Bay, Ben Howard and George Ezra? And maybe Arcade Fire not being seen as a triumph for women is kind of the triumph. People just saw it as normal; no novelty, no 'female artist' stuff, just women being in a band without any fanfare as it will hopefully eventually be. Zoo Music Girl
Even as a one off I'd see any kind of women only day as super patronising, if well meaning. Patti Smith was many people's highlight this year and Dolly, Florence and Beyonce by most accounts smashed it in line with relevant expectations. I thought Courtney was ace and many people gave rave reviews of Mavis Staples and FKA Twigs. They didn't need special treatment. Kate Bush sold out god knows how many nights without it. I'm generally not one for positive discrimination though in most walks of life, though, so might be just me. Other women would probably disagree. Also: correct, I am no lady
