The mass capitulation to the "biggest artist in the world" fallacy is crazy. She's sold a tonne of albums. And? Since when does that mean that's great for the Sat night headliner? Don't remember hordes of people clamouring for her to play over past while.ย

Accepting that this is the natural route the festival should take isn't me. Soz.

Is anyone going to actually watch Adele?

Not aย whole lot of people on here it seems but the field will be rammed. As it will be for Coldplay.

Id rather be in the longdrops for the duration but cant deny its a massive massive booking.ย

She sold out a world tour in minutes and her shows have been getting rave reviews. Shes the biggest touring act in the world at the moment.ย

Though inverse also applies. It shouldn't be a barrier to her playing.ย

If Back Street Boys orย Celine Dion had been announced in the mid 1990's would you have defended them/her? Maybe I've got this "great music in a field thang" all wrong Cally mate.

Would the same smug comments be trotted out...ย "Huge booking, undeniable, 80k, packed field, Glasto showing their commercial strength, the kids love it... Shite tho, I'll be nowhere near it."

?

Im not against "pop" btw. Not against Adele. Find her charming and endearing, with a clear love for the festival. She'll be miles better than that cretin West last year. Nor am I arguing she shouldn't play.

Im as offended by the "great booking, fucked if I'll be there tho" commentary as I am with the sales = justification angle.

I've been having a ponder this afternoon, and I reckon the problem for me is not the bookings for headliningย the Pyramid, they'd be daft not to snap her up if she's interested, it's more that lots and lots of the other main stages (Other, WH, Park) also seem to be in this arms race for popularity/household names.

Fine, put Adele/Coldplay on the pyramid, but put a real alternative on at the JP or even the Other. I really don't think a group of mid 50s with their biggest hits 30 years behind them are really an alternative to Adele.ย

ย

Sure put the mainstrema on the Pyramid, but be more adventurous on the other stages. It's not all about the ratings

And trotting out the 'music for real music fans' bullshit isn't smug?

I think New Order is the perfect alternative to Adele.ย

On one hand you have the current biggest artist about now, with a load of pleasant enough if somewhat bland tunes headlining Pyramid. Then on the other you have the electro pop legends with a spanking new album, which will appeal to dance heads and indie kids alike. New Order have tweaked the hits just enough to not piss off the purists, while giving them enough grunt for the kids to have a right good boogie.

It is the perfect combination really imo.

I don't think that comparison really bears up to much scrutiny. Truth told, ย I dunno if there are many past equivalentsย here. She's already an archetype, her own thing. You can recognise her in silhouette.ย

The closest I can come to - having discounted everyone from Peggy Lee to Joe Cocker - is a hypothetical situation where Amy Winehouse didn't die and came back with a blockbuster album post Back To Black. Would you begrudge that a headlining slot?

Couldn't agree more as Adele playing pyramid has meant one less clash as we want to be at New order, given we don't know who's going to be playing Park, JP and WH plus all the smaller stages I think there will be enough to go around :)

The more years it carries on thatย we have the "huge but awful" bookings at the top of the bill the fest is losing something.

You were one of the peeps that said the festival was dying and needed rescuing a couple of years back because there was no marquee name andย relatively smallfryย Arcade Fire and Kasabian headlining.

You've also put your weight behind the idea of Madonna headlining a bunch of times, IIRC.

Luv yer Wooderson, but you wheel out some right hypocritical nonsense when you're not happy with a headliner.

Yeah. It's a weakย bookingย in its own right, but as an alternative to Adele it's lousy.
