They probably only need 4 points before the end of the season. If that. I can't see both Sunderland and Newcastle getting seven and eight points respectively from eight games to draw level with Palace as they are now. Not to mention that they have 18 goals on Newcastle with regards to goal difference.

Shelvey is more of a sitting distribution mid, but he's still attacking rather than tempo-controlling. From the 2.5 seasons I had of watching Shelvey, I would say his best role is actually as the "number 10" as an attacking midfield. Yes he can sit further back and try to ping his Hollywood balls, but ideally I would want him further up the pitch where his passes can cause more damage to the opposition, and less to his own team... Also, with both to face Norwich and villa, there's less chance for all teams to catch up. They really don't need much.

Hence my classing him as an attacking mid. He's certainly not defensive. That said, his best contributions for Newcastle so far have been Hollywood balls, but Bright moments don't make a 12m player. There's a top quality player in there, but he does have a tendency to go missing for spells in games, which frustrates him, and he ends up hitting some awful shot from outside the box (saw some of this on Sunday). I've got no doubt he's saving his first Newcastle goal for when you play Swansea on the 16th April...

Someone earlier said he wasn't in charge of transfers, yet you say he has chosen players. Is it some sort of committee like Liverpool? While we agree that Demichelis and Bony aren't ideal candidates to be playing, that's not purely down to tactics and selection. Its still down to recruitment, because why don't city have significantly better players in the squad so they don't need to play these players? Why do city have a decent first 11, but then fall apart when they lose key players? I have looked at their bench at times this seasons and its been threadbare for one of the richest clubs in world football. Why is a club that is building towards being an elite club regressing in strength of squad. When they won the league first they had Aguero, Balotelli, Dzeko and Jovetic,, now they have Bony as the backup. As I have said despite their wealth they haven't bought a top centre back since Kompany, yet have spent big amounts in trying. Whoever is scouting and making final decisions (whether manager or above) really are failing in the transfer market and city are paying the price. Sorry for the late reply mate, I have been mad busy and just popping in the Glasto chat on my phone. The main man responsible for transfers is Txiki Begiristain. He was brought in to replicate what was achieved at Barca. He is Peps mate and they worked successfully at Barca together (as well as playing in the Barca team together) for many years. The general consensus is that the initial plan was to bring in Pep 3 years ago. Unfortunately for them we had Mancini at that time. There was animosity between Mancini and Txiki from the off. Before they could find a valid reason to remove Mancini, Pep had gone Bayern. It is reported that Pep had agreed to move to City after his spell in Munich, 3 years ago. That season then pretty much fell to pieces and Pellegrini was lined up as a stop gap till Pep came. In regards to transfers, Txiki is the man in charge. If we are going to be honest here, his record in the transfer market while at City has been utterly woeful. He should not escape criticism and his whole reputation has hinged on being able to attract Pep to City, Pellegrini has picked a few of his mates in Demichelis and Willy. Regardless of the transfers though, Pellegrini has pretty much had the best squad in the premier league at his disposal, during his tenure. I don't want to keep banging the drum in regards to my opinion of Pellegrini as I have made my thoughts pretty clear. The sooner he leaves the better and I think the vast vast majority of City fans are in agreement over that.

I agree with Marcotti that now he has done his job and brought in his mate, he should be sent out of the door. Theres no evidence he excels in the transfer market. To me its not just the people he has brought in, but the age profile of the squad he has accumulated.
thetime
Like many I am intrigued how pep is going to get on at city. He had the golden generation and messi at barca and Munich were already treble winners, Basically will be starting from base level with city. Ferran Sorriano is the CEO and big mates of both Pep and Txiki Begiristain. We will have at least 3 years of all of them,

I was expecting something less based on sentences for other sex crimes, and I'd guess he was too ... so I suspect there'll be an appeal over the sentence. pink_triangle
England should have reasonable expectations, never as bad as people made out in recent years, yet never as good as people thought in the peak. I don't think Germany lose a 2 goal game when it matters. They have lost 4 of their last 8 games, (England, USA, Ireland, France) but I doubt the players care, not will it impact tournament performances . I find the amount of analysis about yesterdays game mad, I have always been of the opinion you can take little from friendlies. Germany have lost their last 3, Spain lost several in between winning 3 trophies.
