BBC are reporting that City are going to sign Delph from Villa.

I've seen a rumour a few times that he was City's alternative buy to Sterling; the fact that they're different types of players seemed odd, but there you go.

So I wonder if that's the end of Sterling's hopes of leaving?

Sky sports news reporting that Liverpool are in dialogue with 2 clbs concerning sterling.

Nah they need both. Surely there's no way of Sterling staying now, even if he has to buy out his contract? Bet his team mates wouldn't be too pleased about sharing a dressing room with someone who's been such a little bitch about them and thrown his toys out of the pram because he thinks he's better than them.

I guess Suarez was similar, but then it was clear he was too good for Liverpool, so it was less embarrassing than the Sterling situation.

I naturally am gutted, seems to be the same old shit at Villa all the time.

Got Barry playing so well he got in England team, SOLD

Got Milner playing so well he got in England team, SOLD

Got Ashley Young playing so well he got in England team, SOLD

Got Downing playing so well he... well he was playing well, SOLD

Now Delph too.

But at least we got money for him instead of him leaving on a free AND we have signed his replacement already in Gueye which has now been confirmed today, same age, obviously he will have to get used to Prem but I think he will do well.

Also this should now, with Sherwood being exactly the manager needed for this, allow Gary Gardener to break into first team and become an established player, he supports Villa too so hopefully if he becomes as good as he his expected to become he won't skank somewhere else, Grealish too.

The only thing that hurts so much, because I don't begrudge Delph a move to a team who will consistantly finish top four and can offer CL and I do believe he will play more of a part than people expect, is that he did the whole loyality speech, guy shouldn't have said anything.

Anyway, players have come and gone and Villa have survived, I trust us to develop the squad better and grow, but I don't think the fans can survive another relegation battle!!! I wonder who our new capt will be now? Maybe Clark or Richards, can't see anyone else.

Yeah it's a silly move by him. He's one of the main men at Villa and has become an England regular, and now he's going to spend his peak years on City's bench, which will lose him that England place.

Its a big gamble the year before an international tournament. Apparently several players are delaying moves for 12 months purely because of concerns that it could cost them a Euro 2016 place, apparently it cost Benzema once.

I'd say what happened with Suarez - or Rooney at Utd, or Terry at Chelsea, or Cesc at Arsenal - shows that a club and players are perfectly able to put stuff like this behind them as long as the player knuckles down and works as they should.

I'm not entirely sure that's Sterling, tho.

Beeb's gossip this morning is reporting that Liverpool would demote Sterling in the reserves rather than sell at below 'valuation' (whatever that might be, reported as £50M).

And, for a club which is buying lots of young 'prospects', I suspect they might really mean that. If they sell out cheap this time they'll be selling out cheaply every time. Losing (say) an on-paper £35M on Sterling would be made up over the future in higher fees.

Sterling is actually a good player for them to use to make this stand too, because he was very cheap for them to acquire in the first place (much cheaper than most other youngsters they have) so the real losses would be minimal if things ended with him running down his contract, and if they do sell him they're not collecting the full fee (cos QPR get a decent cut).

Because of where things have got to I reckon the club would rather he was sold, but there's value to be had in playing tough and perhaps ending up with him still at the club, too.

but from the opposite, Mata moved to Utd to secure his WC place and still didn't get it.

Has a club ever done that for a significant period of time? I know some have threatened, but I don't remember anyone seeing it through.

I'm not sure.

I guess words like that end up playing out as a negotiation stance, so it wouldn't necessarily be the case that things would need to ever get that far.

The prospective buyers either come in with a big enough offer, or the player realises the transfer isn't going to happen and realises they might as well go along with reality willingly, as Suarez did.

The player would have to be pretty dumb to be so intransigent to get nothing of what they were wanting by being in the reserves.

Possibly, yeah.

But better than RvP, even tho he's gone off the boil a little? I'm less sure.

There's a shortage of top quality strikers at the moment, and the few that are out there and perhaps buy-able are at stupid money.

Not like United to pay stupid money for players in the last 2 years is it.

I can't see United going into the season with just Rooney, they have Wilson but pretty much untested. There is talk about depay playing as a striker, although I can't see that.

Although if di Maria stays he will be competing for the same wing job as depay.

More questions than answers.

So Wijnaldum confirmed. Transfer fee undisclosed but announced as 3rd highest in our history, meaning somewhere between £10.3m (colo) and £15m (Shearer). Hopefully his impact is more like that of either of those rather than the other 2 in our top 5.
