Swansea - he was bookies favourite, think he'd just been sacked along with Souness at Newcastle.

We appointed Martinez, at the time still playing in midfield for Chester in League 2, and the rest is history...

Ah fair enough. It's pretty depressing to consider we got promoted to the Championship with you in 2008, and then again with Bournemouth in 2013, and we're now in relegation in League One without a manager.

Although wouldn't it be fair to say relegation places in league one is a lot closer to doncasters historical level than the championship?

To be fair you went from Conference to Championship in 5 years, that was a pretty quick progression...

Does Brian Flynn still work for your club?

There's a blast from the past - am sure he was Wrexham manager when we lost to them in a Cup replay at home.

Thought we'd got away with that after a draw in the snow at Wrexham. Not a chance that game would be played now. Good times*

*Well bad times really, but you know what I mean hopefully

We were Conference when I started going so can't complain really. Where would Bournemouth's historical level be, though?

In the past we were certainly above Conference level, though, before our chairman tried to burn down the stadium for insurance and played his next door neighbour in goal.

Anyway I think League One is probably the right place for a club of our size now, with the odd foray into the Championship.

He's director of football here according to his Wikipedia page but I dunno. Haven't heard him mentioned once in association with the club since he managed us the other year. He took over as manager when Saunders left. Got us promotion and then the job was given to chuffing Paul Dickov for some reason.

Edit: But yeah those years were nice. We were the most successful club in the country at that time, in terms of moving up the ladder.

First Championship season was great, too. Bottom by miles at Christmas; ended up midtable and would have won the league if it had started at Christmas. Weird season.

Bournemouth league 2 I would say, of course if you spend enough you can get to whatever level you want or go bust. I think fans may sometimes overestimate the size of their club, I would put doncaster more league 1/league 2 than championship/league 1.

.

Flynn is my favourite manager of all time. Managed 4 teams (not including caretaker at wales) wrexham, swansea, wales u 21 and doncaster, in my view succesful at all. Unlucky not to get a chance at a higher level in view of other people who did.

I never understood the dickov swap. Who would employ a manager who had recently been sacked at a lower level, well maybe newcastle!

In the all time table they're 71st - so near the top of Division 4 (or League 2 in new money). However, the table is skewed due to the age of a football club and therefore how many league games they've played.

He was instrumental in getting the ball rolling at Swansea. Signed some key players who made a massive impact at the club: (Martinez, Britton, Trundle, Tate). However, he definitely left at the right time, used to only train the team twice a week as he refused to relocate from Burnley!

Fair enough, I guess the majority of time I've been watching us we've been Championship/League One so that probably skews my judgement.

Was going to say I thought we also had one of the biggest stadiums in League One but it appears we're 10th. I guess you forget how big some of the underachieving clubs at that level actually are.

I assume he must not have wanted the job; maybe preferred being director of football. When we appointed Dickov the final two candidates after the interview process were him and Appleton, so there can't have been any good applicants.

The worrying thing is that after the Dickov sacking we've taken the same approach to getting our new manager - advertising the post and interviewing candidates rather than actively going out to get a manager we want. Bookies favourites are Neil Redfearn or Rob Jones and most people seem to be content with the idea of Redfearn.

Edit: And as of Sunday, Newcastle are now my local team. Just gets better! Actually Sc**thorpe are my local team at the moment so that's pretty naff.

Theres been a lot of rumour about Ancelotti in the last few days. It would be an interesting appointment, but he hasnt managed a club who arent in the top couple of spenders in the league for a while.

Klopp seems to be the big rumour also, Would be surprised if either of them took it on.

Wouldn't rule out king Kenny coming back..

Why? He managed it last season, and he managed it the season before, and he managed it the season before that.

He knows how to do it, but whether he'll be given the time to find it is another thing.

He hasn't rode out a crisis like this. When he took over first and was losing it was obvious he was changing the way they played so could leverage on that. Then he had Suarez, then it was "oh but hes lost Suarez" and now......

"Character, outstanding" etc etc and the fans wanting him out.
