I'm all for freedom of speech, but putting D:Ream and James in the same bracket has me hankering for censorship.

Haha.

I've never really listened to James properly to be fair, I just always considered them to be the same one hit wonder ilk.

Like I said, I've never heard people big up or recommend James before seeing them being brought up every other thread here.

Does this place double as their official fan club or something?

Laid is the American Pie film song?

I may recognise it when I hear it then.

As it stands the only one I can recall instantly is Sit Down.

I'm not a huge fan of either. But I can only name one Florence song and that's a cover. James? Laid, Sit Down, Walzing Along, Come Home, She's a Star, Born of Frustration...

Having said that, the thought that a number one selling artist headlining Glastonbury would be overshadowed by James is a bit far-fetched in my humble

Edit - and Tomorrow, as referenced above

recent setlist from isle of wight they played Sit down First, bunch of album tracks from there latest and then Laid last, if they were to play that sub slot, they would need to get born of fustration etc in there

I know little of the music industry so someone correct me if I'm wrong. But surely they'd love the chance to play as many of the festivals as possible? It would increase record sales, make them more money and increase their popularity no doubt.

Which is what they're doing...

James were superb at Bearded Theory which I wasn't expecting, thought I'd go along to see what they were like for about 20 minutes or so, ended up staying for the whole set and loving it. Even the songs I didn't know sounded great.

Ideal band for that slot.

Buy or stream their 'Best Of' and you'll be surprised how many of the tunes you know.

It's excellent

Ah I see your point just seen their tour dates across Europe over the summer. Makes much more sense, cheers.

Yea but that one is a cover i believe!

Yeah I think you may be right, great song the original.

I can understand the sentiment of people and realise Florence is extremely popular right now. But she does not have a 30 year career behind her. I used James as an example of why Glastonbury would not put a biggish crowdpleaser type band before her. They have put faith in her and will not want a to over shadow her. I am not a Stereophonics fan but could not see them doing it either, same goes for Nile Rogers and Chic.

Not wanting to get into arguments really. People not up on James should go watch a live performance from them on youtube. They are fantastic live. If they played all their best stuff then Glo followed them with one very good album and a few okish ones, plus a cover of an all time classic dance tune might not have the effect the organisers with for.

Not really. Personally I love straight guitar bands. Just not dead boring ones that you'd generally hear on commercial top 40 radio. And no, not because they appeal to the masses -- just because I find that it generally means they're boring and unchallenging. There are obviously exceptions to this (ie. Arctic Monkeys, the Strokes etc) - high quality acts that you'd see on Pitchfork (bunch of w*nkers, mind) as well as hear heavily played on Radio 1.

Stereophonics are a V Festival band. End of. And yes, I mean that as an insult.

I could point towards more than half of the guitar based bands on the main few stages and say the same thing - does glastonbury just have to be full of "challenging" music because its somehow got better fans?

Thing is I'm a fan of and listen to plenty of bands that were "before my time" so to speak but I've never thought or been told in my life "listen to James' back catalogue" and then I come on here and people are like BOOK JAMES.

That's because, even as one of my favourite bands, they're not great on record. I never tell people to listen to back catalog. I tell them to go see them live. They're a phenomenal live band and the perfect festival band. As others have said, you might think you only know one song then you'll go along and realize you know six or seven.

No chance would James overshadow Florence. It probably depends on your age how many of their songs you know as I doubt many younger people would know more than a couple. I bought their best of a couple of years ago and the only ones I knew were Laid, Sit Down and Tomorrow and even then the latter was only because the Courteeners cover it.

I just thought they were basically a one hit wonder like Mike and the Mechanics and that band Brain Cox was in.

Yeah same. In the real world the only times I've heard them mentioned are my Dad saying they were good at Bearded Theory and my mate saying he thinks the lead singer is from Wakefield in a discussion about bands from our home city (Short discussion, The Cribs, Black Lace, Be-Bop Deluxe).
