Anyone get the sense the end of Glastonbury is nigh?

There are long term sponsorship deals and contracts in place. These aren't redone on a yearly basis. The festival is safe for a while.

in nearly all cases the contracts are signed only up-till the next fallow year.

And in all cases the contracts are written in a way that does not oblige Glastonbury to hold a festival in any year, but which only requires them to use those contractors if a festival is held.

This plus the reaction from areas like the Greenfields, who will lose certain aspects of their environment that defines them, such as permaculture - an area which has taken years to properly nurture and establish, Kings Meadow Stone Circle and the Kings Oak etc. Other semi-permanent structures are more portable and could be moved, such as the Greenpeace / Kids Field ships. However, some elements are intrinsic to the existing site and its history and could never be moved, such as Bella's Bridge, the railway tunnels and bisecting track, the overlooking Tor.

All that can stay, if they take Glastonbury back to a smaller festival on land owned by the Eavis. It would be interesting to see a landownership map of what areas the Eavis actually own.

I wonder if, as these rumours seem to be associated with Emily, The Park area might be removed from Glastonbury and turned into a separate festival? It has been her baby all along, and the area can't really expand where it is. If it became a separate event elsewhere, a site could be found for a larger scale event with a similar feel. It would also mean more camping space within Worthy farm land, and therefore less land needing to be rented from neighbours. Obviously, plenty of people would be disappointed if this did happen, but I can see it being a possibility.

Neil will the levels of piss in the water be released for the public? sorry if its a daft question mate just interests me as to how bad this year was compared to others.

I,ve only been twice but did notice more people pissing than last year but that could be down to alcohol or anything like that.

Cheers ears :thumbsu:

Yes

Point taken though, it was a generic term used to tar an entire chunk of society, I would say unfairly. But it made a useful example at the time.

I do stand by the fact that I spent 2 hours in the queue on Wednesday listening to a guy talking about his year training junior gymnasts in Eastern Europe and telling the girl he was with about his spirit animal...

Haha yes, I take your point, people using mum and dad's money to 'find themselves' is what I believe you're referring to?

Yeah, its like "Glastonbury-Lite" - PR suicide imho...

Needs to be a new festival with its own identity to succeed.

it would obviously be a new festival with new name. they're not going to just move it 50 miles away, have 10% of the attractions, and call it Glastonbury.

there are plenty of festival areas that have broken off from their parent festival, and started their own smaller festivals and been a success.

Indeed, in particular the types (like a couple of my cousins) who have absolutely no appreciation of where that money comes from, and are able to write off £100+ of camping gear when they leave because they'll just buy more next year.

Funny story, I actually went to find myself.  We did meet up but forgot to exchange contact details, and sadly lost touch.  I have no idea where I am these days, but I hope I'm doing well.

Yes, I get what you mean, I literally can't go for a year as I won't have earned enough money by then!

I heard you're in a gutter in southwestern Burma?

ah, interesting. I'd heard similar (about them not necessarily have to hold the festival in a specific year), and that was how they were able to move the fallow year, so contracts were for a fixed number of years, rather than fallow to fallow.

If its not published a freedom of information request could always be made I guess if people really wanted to know could probably get data going back a few years

Thing is, Glastonbury seems to be a major stress for them in the run up. Would they want to add to that by having 2 festivals in the same year?

Reading/Leeds, Latitude and Electric Picnic are all run by the same people. Obviously there's a huge amount setup involved, people to recruit and so on when starting a new one, which is why it would be happen in a fallow year. But it's not like Emily is going to be organising every aspect of both festivals on her own.

If she wants a career running festivals, it makes sense to run more than one and be in charge of one. Especially with the Worhy land issues- both current and the question of what happens when Micahel goes.

something else somewhere else I think rather than the big G

Scottie, why was it shocking?

If it's just another one in the fallow year then I wouldn't see that as shocking?  Or have I missed something in this mighty thread?

Presume its Oxlyers, Bushy Ground etc. A horrible part of the site. Stinks of piss and shit (both human and bovine), has awful toilets, a constant flock of seagulls circling like vermin, mass tent thefts, shit food stalls and is the first place to get muddy and the last place to recover.

Oxlyers is a shit part of the site alright.

Stayed there in the incessant misery of 2007 and it was that campsite as much as anything else that broke my spirit and made me take a few years off.

Wonder would it help if Oxlyers was removed as a campsite and another one added beyond Bushy Ground?

Surely very few people who stay in Oxlyers actually choose it out of anything other than absolute need?

Why didn't you? I've had to do 3 years of a levels having cocked up my first year a bit, so I thought some time out was necessary

Because I wanted to be in uni the same year as my mates (LAME) though one settled for a pointless degree instead of doing another year of A Levels, as he didn't get his main or insurance offer so I'm not the worst in the bunch. I should have done another year of A levels really.

I cocked up A levels but still got lucky as my uni let me in. This last year's going to be an absolute bitch as I need to up my grade massively, lolz.

With regards to the land the Eavis own, am I right in thinking that all the stages are on their land?

The rule of thumb I was told years ago, and I've no idea if it was ever true let alone whether it still would be - Long Drops (ie with some permanent foundations) are only on Worthy Farm, the neighbouring land gets temporary solutions.
