I'm talking the Sunday 4pm slot here. Not the legends who have played the festival in those years.

Willie Nelson played that slot in 2000 but in 2002 and 2003, they didn't have a legend there so there wasn't a trend.

It began in 2004.

Nah, definitely not. It skipped 2003 and maybe one or two other years (Isaac Hayes was 2002), and might have been a shade later in the day in some years before settling into the current time slot, but by most accounts the legends slot was invented when Johnny Cash played in 1994.

The Sunday legend 4th up on the Pyramid slot started in 2004. Satisfied?

Always around to niggle at what I put on here aren't you? ;)

Would David Byrne doing a Talking Heads set constitute a legends slot? For me that's a headliner, but I would take the Sunday afternoon slot.

Not that it'd ever happen, mind.

I don't reckon he's ready to be put out to grass just yet. He's still producing well-received new music.

I'm not sure he'd be much interested in doing a TH-songs-only set either. He's happy enough to play old songs but he's also interested in what he's doing now, too.

And anyway, some of the best songs he's done have been with his solo stuff (tho there's plenty I'm less keen on too).

I'd say you're likely to see him booked again for a 'proper' slot on one of the stages sometime soonish, as it's a long while since he has ('97, I think it was), and I know that Michael is a fan.

What was the last festival he did? The Big Chill?

Yeah, that was superb (can you tell I'm a fan? :P). Tho he's also done at least one Byrne & St Vincent uk festie show since then.

He's curating Meltdown in London next month, and playing there.

There's an 'Atomic Bomb: The Music of William Onyeabor' show as the headliner at WOMAD in a couple of weeks - that's part of Meltdown too, and Byrne is playing the only other announced show in Paris in September - so me and Scottie were just discussing whether he's likely to show up at WOMAD too ... and I think the chances are pretty good.

His latest blog is from a few days ago and is talking about Greece. which tends to suggest he's currently in Europe. Plus, he collaborated with Peter Gabriel a couple of years ago, Gabriel is a big fan, and I know Byrne has been on WOMAD's most-wanted list for a number of years now (it's while since he last played) ... so I'm keeping my fingers firmly crossed as i'll be there anyway. :)

With a bit of luck he might be touring again next summer.
