Sunday Legend 2016

O'Doyle Rules

Recommended Posts

at Boomtown last weekend, I was at the hidden woods stage between bands, and suddenly instead of some of the more normal fill-in tracks from the DJ over the PA there was 'In The Air Tonight".

The missus said "everyone will do the drum roll"

And sure enough, not only did the people at the stage do it, we saw people 200 yards away well out of sight of the stage all do it unison. It was very funny.

How was Boomtown? Determined to make it there in the next few years.

shame about the lineup, really ;)

get back to your landfill, then. Cos that can be all that you like.

Last year the line-up was a bit limited in its genre-scope. This year it definitely wasn't.

I saw heavy rock, I saw folk, I saw african, I saw reggae, I saw dub, I saw rap, i saw psy-trance, I saw d'n'b, and I saw gawd knows how many different genres of other dance music I wouldn't even try to start to classify.

Everything except indie-landfill. Heaven. :D

just not my thing musically at all really! which is a shame because i've heard from a fair few people that it's one of the better UK music fests around at the moment so it's crap that i'll probably never get to experience it

Boom Town could never hope to attract the likes of Phil Collins, though.

Just look at this stage tho.... and this is last year's version ... the new site for it is even more impressive (I can't find any pics for it at the mo, we've not got the efests ones up yet)

I'd love to go to to Boom Town and the lineups always look great - but from a practicalities-as-a-punter POV that stage looks a bit hemmed in at the sides. Getting in and out of the front doesn't look a doddle (at least, depending on how close those trees are together).

yep, it was too cramped for the biggest acts last year (I'm guessing that pic was taken around the time of The Wailers), tho was fine the year before (the numbers increased). It was actually very easy to get to the front despite how that pic looks, as there was always space to get down thru the trees on the right, to then cut in from the side.

The numbers have increased yet again which is why they've now moved it, into a huge natural bowl where anyone can get a great view, and which is fabulous for lounging around at on a sunny afternoon. It was great before, but now it's even better.

I've read continuously that it's a big Shangri-La and if so, it pretty much says to me a massive drug infested land. Not everything that isn't dance/rock related is indie-landfill so to speak and it's ignorant to suggest it. It very much comes down to the lineup that stops me from trying it, and I like my dancier stuff.

that's more of an easy way to describe it than a true reflection of everything that it is (even tho the SL crew are heavily involved).

it pretty much says to me a massive drug infested land

That may or may not be true, but...

As it happens friends and i got chatting to a 41 year old lady on the Saturday night, who was at her first ever festival. Someone said to her that loads of people were on drugs and she was amazed; she said she wouldn't have known.

Having said that, it's possible you might notice that some are, but who cares? There's certainly no greater proportion of knobheads than you might encounter at any other festival.

absolutely superb, and now a festival that everyone but the indie-fans will find is for them.

(let's hope it stays indie-free)

It's the best festival in the UK, and with the best sited and best-looking large stage of any UK festival.

Sounds great, I've heard it described as being more like the smaller, more niche, more wander-and-see-what-you-come-across areas of Glastonbury, and they're the parts I tend to enjoy the most.

It would be my main festival priority for next year but some friends are leaving the country and are planning on making Glastonbury the last thing we do together before they go.

As a 30-year-old, I went to Glastonbury for the first time this year, loved it. I also went to Boomtown for the first time this year and loved that, too. Having been to a few festivals, it's definitely the closest to Glastonbury for atmosphere and general aesthetics. They build a town with streets and there are little nooks and crannies everywhere with DJs, acts, bands. It's crazy, in a good way. There are a lot of drugs, but there is at Glastonbury too. Overall, everyone was in a party mood, friendly and most importantly, very fun and accommodating. If you love Glastonbury away from the main stages, you'll love Boomtown.

to be fair it would be a good sight.

not a lot i can think of who it could be. some of the acts mentioned here are diobolical

Do you even remember the 80s bro*? He was the enemy.

*I'm unclear why I used the term 'bro', I can only offer as an excuse the fact that I have a cold and am being forced to watch 'Kate and Mim Mim' by a tiny tyrant.

  • 4 weeks later...

This one might sound a bit silly, and probably a bit of an anticlimax after Dolly and Lionel, but Keith Richards has a new solo record out next week.

In his old X-Pensive Winos sets, he used to do Stones songs like Gimme Shelter, Before They Make Me Run and Happy. He could chuck in a few other tracks such as You Got The Silver and a couple of covers that I've heard him do and that could be a decent legends set.

Yeah, I know he's not got a prolific solo career, but he's a Roling Stone.

Keef singing You Got The Silver and Happy on the Pyramid, eh?

can't ever see it meself.

Reckon you might be right.

It stops being an ironic booking if people actually go en masse. I'm not sure people are getting it. ;)

I thought Lionel wouldn't get much of a crowd this year, so it shows what I know. I suspect Wrong Bazza would also be a big draw.

I heard this the other week and actually found myself rather enjoying it as a piece of blue eyed soul:
