O'Doyle Rules

what do you mean not doable. They've been doing it for a few years already.

Maybe wires crossed here.

My point was, what the promoters are claiming to be a 'hologram' is nothing of the sort, just a projection onto a screen - not necessarily high-tech either. But very much 2D. I'm sure its convincing enough if you're far away and looking at it straight on, but closer and from an oblique angle, looks totally fake.

An actual 3D projection hologram as seen in all types of SF movies - that, we're years from.

Wasn't Tupac at Coachella a 3D hologram?

Nope. This is exactly my point. It was just a projection. The technology for a true 3D moving hologram simply doesn't exist. The promoters have been using the word hologram to hype up what is an ancient parlour trick. I mean, people are hardly going to go wild for a 'Tupac projection' are they?

Bands get suggested a lot for this slot, but I don't know when a band has ever done it.  A quick check of Wikipedia;

2015 - Lionel Richie

2014 - Dolly Parton

2013 - Kenny Rogers

2011 - Paul Simon

2010 - Ray Davies

2009 - Tom Jones

2008 - Neil Diamond

2007 - Shirley Bassey

2005 - Brian Wilson

2004 - James Brown

2003 - Err, Macy Grey?

2002 - Isaac Hayes

2000 - Willie Nelson

1999 - Al Green

1998 - Bob Dylan/Tony Bennett

1997 - Van Morrison

Get fuzzy after than on Wikipedia, but looks like

1995- Page and Plant

1994 - Johnny Cash

1992 - Tom Jones

Since the apparent break of 2003, it's always been fourth from the top and always been a solo artist.  Even before then, even if you squint a bit, no old bands seem to have played the slot.  Ok, The Coors were 4th from the top in 1999, but they were on after Rev Green, so I don't think they were the 'legend' that year!

I'm not saying it won't ever be an old band, but as far as I can tell, it never has been in the past.  Some of these bands may well play, but probably not in that slot.

I'm not looking forward to the day when I the artist featured in the legend slot had their first song out when I was listening to music (I.e later 80s or later).  When that happens, I will feel OLD.  I'm talking seeing their first music on TOTP, like Blur, not leaving their band and doing new music (Brian Wilson would technically qualify for that), but seeing them as a 'new' act on the telly.  Can't be that far off!

2008 was Leonard Cohen.
