Not sure how you define greatest? is it favourite? best selling? most influential/important? I've gone for the later and voted for kraftwerk

If The Beatles hadn't been born another group would have received similar success and acclaim. Culture was desperate for a musical shift and they were in the right place at the right time. This isn't to say they weren't a good band, but without them, I don't think music would be that different. Talking Heads changed the use of rhythm in music. They created a bigger and less forseeable shift.

That first sentence is absurd. So The Beatles never exist and some other band come along get the initial success and then what? Does that band write Revolver, Sgt Peppers and Abbey Road too?

I wonder how many of the artists we have today would list The Beatles as an influence.

Best selling and influential surely has to be The Beatles?

I pretty much agree with this when it talks about pop music:

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/culture/music/rockandpopfeatures/9837423/Kraftwerk-the-most-influential-group-in-pop-history.html

On top of that there is industrial, hip-hop, synth-pop, techno and house, basically all electronic music

When you look at where most music is now ( as in 90% of the stuff you'll hear day to day), kraftwerk are much more influential that the beatles and that's coming from someone who isn't a massive fan.

Yeah, I definitely think The Beatles are the most influential band that has ever been, and I'd argue it wasn't just because the culture at the time was "desperate" for them.

They wrote four of the best albums of all time, that, in my eyes nobody has even come close to. Some other band would not have mimicked their success because no other band would ever have been good enough:)

Which four?
