Dr Dre New Album

I've just copied and pasted my response from the 2015 releases thread in the Glastonbury forums:

It feels like such a complete final statement. Dre's real talent has always been in his choice of collaborators, so to have him playing ringmaster to at least three generations of hip-hop talent is a perfect way to bow out. And it also means that it would have been equally weird to not have Eminem on the album.

But I still think his presence on Medicine Man is the one false step. It's not just that awful rape gag, although that's inexcusable. It's also that the whole album seems so totally and consistently bound up with hip-hop's roots in black urban communities that when Eminem jumps up doing his shtick it really jars for me and takes me out of the overall flow. He's like the kid who can't believe he's been invited to the cool party so overcompensates by being as loud and obnoxious as possible.

But then Dre has a large black mark next to his name re. violence towards women, so maybe it's symbolically fitting to have that black mark on the album, even if it's unintentional.

It's harder to find people who don't tbh

Certainly pop, rock and rap do seem to be chock-full of men who generally act abusively, beat women, rape children (though apparently it's morally okay if they're groupies).

My favourite wee tale was how Phil Collins - the man who divorced his wife by fax - hates Jamiroquai because he screamed racist abuse at a white valet who didn't deliver his Ferrari to him quickly enough. And let's not even get into mega-millionaire tax-dodgers who raise a lot of money for charity.

Musicians turn out to be a selfish egotistical deluded hypocritical fucks posing at being cool to crowds of adoring dimwits? Where do I sign up?

album is, surprisingly, fantastic. agree that the misogynistic lyrics (and totally out of nowhere skit about killing a woman) are un-needed and outdated (people seemed to let that stuff slip fifteen or so years ago - now, just like on Eminem's latest album, it sounds ridiculous). but apart from that, it's a solid album, and a great way for Dre to end his rapping career (well, his own albums anyway). and for those who haven't listened, it's not a soundtrack album to the film - it's a proper Dre album and follow up to '2001'

Never been a fan of Eminem. One or two of his songs are okay but of late I can't stand his lyrics. Shame about the violent lyrics, I'll give it a listen tomorrow.

Sums up his whole career for me, really.

I liked alot of his early stuff, but he just became a caricature of himself so quickly and now I wish he'd just give it up and retire into a life of vaguely amusing cameos in comedy films.

Would recommend the new Game album The Documentary 2 for anyone who liked this - it's very good and of a similar vein. Plus Dre pops up, along with Snoop, Ice Cube, Diddy, Q-Tip, Kendrick, Kanye, Drake, and I'm pretty sure Nas is on the second disc that's out next week. I know The Game gets a lot of derision and his early stuff gets overlooked for formerly being part of G-Unit but trust me on this one.

I asked my mom to buy me 2001 when she was in LA. Blew my friends minds who we were all into nu-metal at the time when I put it on during art class & a lot of my even close friends were against listening to it.

At the time we didn't really understand any apparent misogynism or anti-this-that-and-the-other lyrics, but we loved the catichiness of the production & verses. We usually had Linkin Park or pop-punk on the stereo & then Eminem arrived.

After re-listening as an adult, it's still amazing. If that can be beaten then it'll be one of the greatest albums of the decade.
