I love Rammstein but they wouldn't be booked for Reading in a million years and i'm glad, you'd get an awful crowd, loads of people seeing them who don't know them just for the stage show and wouldn't properly get into it.

What a load of bollocks. What so the average person who isn't a Rammstein fan at Download is watching them for anything other than the stage show? I hate to break it to you but I think you'll find, especially at Download 2013, that by the end of their set there was a hell of a lot of people seeing them who didn't know them just for the stage show. Unless you're a Rammstein fan, you're probably not going to know many songs outside of Du Hast, and it's pretty hard to get "properly" into it outside of enjoying the fire and stage show unless you speak German or have heard their songs before.

In 2016/17 when metal music is arguably at it's least relevant in the mainstream or at Reading and Leeds for absolutely years, Rammstein are the one band that you absolutely want headlining. It doesn't matter what kind of music you like or how much you hate or think metal music is uncool, if you see a headline Rammstein set from a distance, you're damn sure going over to check out what the fuck is happening.

Would Rammstein instantly convert 1000's of these people to their music and metal music in general? No of course not. But it will get people talking about Rammstein and metal music. If you've seen a Rammstein set at a festival you're damn sure going to be telling people about it afterwards.

Great post.

How many people do you meet anywhere who are actually massive Rammstein fans? When they get mentioned you get far more who are like, "Oh they're that German band who have all the fire and stuff!"? I'm not a huge Rammstein fan by any stretch, I'd probably only know half the songs on their setlist, but I would absolutely love to see them just to experience their show.

I don't think that's a fair comment. They've got enough fans to sell out arena tours over here and headline festivals. Sure they're a band that attract more casual fans to their festival shows because of the uniqueness of it, but there are loads of rammstein fans in the UK.

I personally am not a rammstein fan. Having seen them once, I have no interest on seeing them headline reading.

Yeah, I realise I didn't word that well at all. Obviously they have their fanbase who will attend their tours etc, but I meant more casual festival goers.

I'm confident that if R+L were to book Rammstein nowadays it would gather the smallest crowd for a headliner in twenty odd years. A decade ago it'd have been alright; their hits were still in memory, they were enough of a musical phenom that yer average bod would be aware of who and what they are - incidentally why they can still do Download as it's still 2006 there - but yeah nowadays they're never playing.

When Rammstein headlined Download in 2013 none of our group would class themselves as fans. Knew a couple of songs but their live reputation was the draw. After they were done we all agreed it was one of the best headline performances we'd seen anywhere. For me, they're a perfect festival headliner & there's something for their fans but if you don't know a single song going in you can still come away completely satisfied.

Can't see Reading ever trying to go for Rammstein as sub headliners now (surely too expensive?) or Rammstein ever wanting to play that slot.

If, as stated before, Reading are likely to lead with their biggest act in the first announcement, Is it only really Guns n' Roses or Kanye that makes sense? Is there enough of a buzz with people under 21 for Stone Roses nowadays to justify them as a lead announcement?

Where would The Prodigy even play now?

Dont know if they'd headline anymore, maybe co-headline or sub?

Im fairly sure Alt-J will co-headline with someone so maybe The Prodigy?

They would sub, that's the same at every major UK bar IOW and now Download....as they wouldn't accept lower there I doubt.

I think it'll be V Fest and Glasto for The Prodigy although they would probably take co-head at Reading. Not being booked since 2009 points me towards it not happening though.

thing is, at Download they fit right in amongst all the other heavy acts so even somebody unfamiliar with their work has a good chance of liking what they do. at R/L they'd be completely different from a lot of the other acts so a lot of people hearing 'german singing metal act' would immediately just go elsewhere instead

Exactly. How many of the average Reading festival goers who have never really heard any of their songs are likely to check them out as a headliner when they could watch say Bastille headline the Nme tent or 'generic edm dj thing' headline the dance tent?

I'd wager not many.

Exactly this, they'd be wasted at Reading.

That's fine though. R&L sell day tickets much cheaper than Download & also have more stages. If Rammstein played, and it was the 'heavy' day the £65 day tickets would be little more than the cost of an arena show & there'd likely be an indie & dance option for people too.

The idea of a 'german singing metal act' may put off some but their live reputation would also pique some interest and as others have mentioned, if you saw that show from a distance you'd go & see what the f*ck was going on as it's absolutely bonkers.
