Can a friend with registration buy a ticket for me (without registration)

I'm afraid I already know the answer for this one.

I was under the impression that I didn't need to register as long as a friend of mine was registered.

He could buy a ticket for me, I just had to pay an extra fee.

That's what I thought at least, but after the sale on Thursday I'm afraid I was wrong.

So can someone confirm this (or refute, that would be better)
