Liking the middle aged man digestive health turn this thread has taken.  45 here, gave up going for the never ending bouts of tests followed by confused looking consultants or GPs who can only suggest more tests which lasted 3 years in total, never coming to any conclusion.  I've just resigned myself to the fact that many middle aged men reach a point in life where their guts can't handle what they used to and if you don't adapt you'll suffer for it.

Mate have you had a colonoscopy? Do you lose blood? Do not resign yourself to anything mate. I was losing blood from my early 20's. Went to the doctors numerous times over 10 years complaining with it. Doctor would stick a digit up each time and then say it was probably piles. At my then age, losing blood from rear end was nothing to worry about apparently. I just accepted it and ignored it..

I did my degree part time as I was working full time. During revision for the 3rd year, I had a really bad flare up. It carried on pretty much none stop for 12 months and well into the 4th year of uni. It was just blood and diarrhoea none stop for over 12 months. Because I was then in my final year of my degree, had my dissertation to do and had a full time job, I just put up with it. After I finished uni my body must have just given up. It got that bad that I actually collapsed and end up in hospital on a drip because I had lost that many fluids from my body. Explaining what had gone on at the hospital, the doctor there said it could be IBS. This was the first time anyone had given me a possible explanation that did not revolve around sticking a finger up my backside and saying it was piles. I got referred back to quacks. Luckily the doctors were booked up for weeks so I went to see the nurse. When she read my records she could not believe I had not seen a gastroenterologist. It was her who first brought IBD to my attention. Off I went to see the gastro. To cut an awful long story short, I eventually had the spit roast (camera up rear end and one down throat). The one up my rear end I could see on the screen while they did it. My intestine was blistered like mad, it looked angry as hell. Low and behold I had been suffering with Colitis for over a decade and the doc was telling me it was piles and nothing to worry about.

Why I have an extra interest in this subject is because of what happened to my mate. midway through 2014 he started losing blood. I was telling him to go docs but he never did. His symptoms sounded different to me as I very rarely had any pain. He got rushed into hospital last xmas and diagnosed with terminal bowel cancer on boxing day 2014. Sadly he dies on 15th Jan last year at the age of 35. It had a profound effect on me. You just do not accept stuff like that until you have satisfactory answers. Push for the cameras while they see what is going on, it really could be a decision that saves your life.

Sorry for the really long post and taking it so far off topic.

Other end for me mate, I spend 2-3 days vomiting every 4 weeks or so, no appetite for a week before and is accompanied by a migraine and general feeling of being run down.  Changing my diet to something really monotone for the last 2 years has reduced the vomiting greatly if not the rest of the symptoms.  Had cameras both ways and the monitor up the nose you have to wear, every kind of imaging and no nearer.  Every single appointment you see a different consultant, every time he/she seems completely unaware of what has been going on so I explain it, they write it down and schedule the same tests I've had before.

These days I just accept that about once a month I'll spend a week feeling like shit and sometimes it will bring vomiting.  T'other end not really ever been an issue.

He loved smoking weed, maybe a little too much though.

That will be good mate, hopefully see you at the meet up :-)

Hey if no-one talks about this stuff, then its shoved under the carpet and hence people are too embarassed/scared to go to the doctors.  Each year we sit on the top of the hill by East campervan fields o the Tuesday evening  with a plastic bottle of sloe gin and we toast absent friends, its always emotional but just part of the tradition now - and important to us

Mate I know all about repeating the same tests. I had a letter telling me that I need to have a renal function blood test before the next camera, even though I had one a month ago.

Don't accept it make, kick off without doing it in a violent or aggressive way. Things fail as we get older but that does not sound right with you. People just don't throw up for no apparent reason or due to the affect of age. Something is clearly poisoning your system.

Have you thought about alternative therapy, Yoga or anything like that?

It does get emotional mate, I know exactly where you are coming from there. Took me an awful long time to get my head round that is for sure.

Honestly, it gets easier to deal with all the time.  Like I say, just some lifestyle and diet changes have had a big impact for me, this started about 7 years back and the last couple of years haven't been nearly so bad as things were.  I'd had several years of my life where every night I'd get in from work, mates would come round and we'd drink and smoke weed for hours then I'd rinse and repeat with an extra helping weekends, so I am guessing it is just a result of shit lifestyle in my 20s and 30s.

Anyhow, enough derailment, come to the meet and I'll entertain you with my barium meal horror story.  It's a corker.

I third it.

If you have stuff to talk about then talk about it - and someone doesn't like it then they can just ignore it.

We can discuss bowel issues at the meet up fellas. I can top trump you all as I actually have pictures on my phone of my symptoms as it is easier to show the doctor rather than try to explain to him the consistency of mucus and blood :-)

Imagine walking along at Glastonbury.

"Check the photos for a laugh."

"Eurghhh. Just take that fucker to lost property"

There are pictures of me on it mate (not lewd or anything like that), that would be enough for someone to say Eurghhhh and hand it in, nevermind the toilet ones:rofl:

Eeeh, it's a frickin lovely day out there, cracking day off all told.  Made a start on the garden today after a couple of failed attempts at mustering enthusiasm for the task.  I had a weird experience this morning where, having mentioned to someone that my lawnmower had died over the weekend, they bought me a replacement without any warning or reasoning.  With that kind of encouragement how could I not get on with it?

Was it your next door neighbour who was fed up with the length of your grass ?

Heh, you have obviously not seen my neighbours' garden ;)  It was a chap from work, only known him 6 months and it was completely unheralded.  Totally didn't know how to react, it would have been rude to have told him I couldn't accept it, so I did, but if I'd known he was thinking of doing something like this I would have done all I could to talk him out of it.  Lovely random act of kindness though, I'll be sure to pass it on as best I can whenever I can.

Give him a bag of the cut grass as a token of your appreciation.
