Spindles
I reckon you can be pretty accurate over about 3-5 days, so at least the day before you'll be able to see if there's any big fronts coming that require either extra wet weather gear or extra suncream. In 2010 I ditched every item of wet weather gear from the pack the day before, giving me extra beer space. In the weeks running up to the festival I look at the met office visual satellite imagery regularly, they do time lapse of the recent shots, so you get a good feel for how weather systems are moving and get a rough idea whether anything is coming our way and if so how big and how long they are likely to last. grumpyhack
But afterwards the clouds disappeared and the weather was glorious. My friend who works for Festival Medical Services reckons that they can tell the conditions on site from the conditions that people come in with for treatment. In 2005 after the floods the biggest problem was 'welly rash' where people who were wearing wellies because of the mud, but shorts because of the sun, had chafing just below their knees where the tops of their wellies rubbed against their bare legs. If you do resort to wellies make sure you wear really long socks to prevent chafing.
balti-pie
2005 was magnificent fun my first year, I fact my very first night at Glastonbury was that ridiculous, pounding, biblical rain for three or four hours where I learnt the important lesson that £12 tents from tesco aren't particularly waterproof! Bless it, it tried. But a 3-man tent for two people isn't big enough. I had to send out the missus to get me some wellies, while I lay under the porch looking at the little river which had formed a good twelve feet away. I wondered what the fuck I was doing with myself! I soon manned up (with excellent welly assistance) and just after breakfast, with a pint in my hand, strolling around looking at mud two feet deep, I was quite happy

If anyone could forecast accurately 8 weeks in advance they would be richer than Bill Gates 3 hours ago, mjfromthelane said: This x1000. Some laughable posts here. I think you've misunderstood the weather thread and what a forecast is. Forecasts in themselves are just an estimate or prediction on a future event. The nearer to that event, the more confident you can be in the prediction. It can be 'accurate' easily in advance. If there's a massive high pressure sat over SW England a week out that shows no sign of moving based on weather events in the surrounding areas and weak low pressures, you can be increasingly confident that it'll be dry. That is at a simple level what JackOne's forecasts are....looking at weather patterns and making increasingly confident guesses. It also depends on what you are basing your accuracy on. Saying it's likely to be mainly dry over the 5 days is very different to saying it's going to rain on the Friday. This thread is all about that guess work, optimism (apart from we're all doomed Nal), speculation and a fairly geeky interest in how weather patterns develop. Nobody is predicting a bone dry 5 days at the moment but long range forecasts such as this http://www.netweather.tv/index.cgi?action=longrange;sess= can leave us optimistically say 'looking promising' when air pressure and temperature are currently suggested to be higher than average this summer. We used to camp in what is now The Park back then, which as you may imagine has a natural centre to it. 4AssedMonkey
Think he's drawing attention to the fact that he's only been to one, totally rain free festival. In fact I think there's only been 3/4 or do completely dry ones ever. 2010 was utterly scorching too. Whilst I'd take it, it was a bit too hot for comfort at times. Ye I was at 2010, as you say, I'd definitely take it again but it was hard work at times! Got sunburnt on the Wednesday watching the football, so was struggling with that for rest of the weekend, had to buy a hat which I looked a complete dick wearing. Think we had to bail out watching the Stranglers as it was just too hot. The tent turned into an oven past 7am. But having said all that I'd still snap your hand off if you offered me that again. balti-pie
If we get 2010 again then I'm gonna make sure I take a metric fuckton of sun cream, and operate a 'no alcohol til 2pm' rule cos I baked my poor little brain dry last time and I don't want to do that! balti-pie
The little lemonade dude by the cider bus and the fresh elderflower geezers up by acoustic got ragged by me in 2010. 2 pints of each, every day, before midday. I figured that if I'm sweating, I'm not dehydrated, and shouldn't panic! (Yet) Edited April 29, 2016 by balti-pie
