Bear in mind that if you arrive late at night you might well be looking for a campsite and putting your tent up in the dark. If you think this is going to happen, make sure you've practiced getting your tent up beforehand, and that you have a decent torch. I speak from bitter experience that pitching in the dark is not easy or fun!

Good advice, year one planning to arrive in the afternoon, queued for 5.5 hours in traffic so arrived wednesday night without a clue of where to camp - was scary, huge, overwhelming and exhausting. Nearly gave up there and then, but directed by the campsite stewards found room in Lime Kiln, pitched, popped the first can at 1.30am , went for a wander and had one of the best weekends ever

For first entry - As already said, the gates are 24 hours although you'll struggle to get a wristband after approximately 8pm Sunday as the stuff will be packed/taken away.. I'm pretty sure if that situation ever came up the remaining staff on the gates would still sort it out somehow, they're not going to leave people with a valid ticket outside when there's still a Festival going on.

But why would you be first time entering after 8pm on Sunday?

99.9% of people wouldn't. But there'll always be the odd one.

Local on a Sunday-only ticket who's been working all day maybe?
