American wants to find the right festival

So I want to go to festival or two this August. I've been going to concerts in the US  for 40 years, seen many of the greats, but want a more uniquely British experience. Prefer a rather intimate folk, roots, world sort of thing, not a full fledged huge rock festival. I travel light with just a carry on backpack, as I do all over the world, so no camping or carrying any supplies. Ideally I want to get off a train or bus, walk to the site, and at night walk to a nearby place to stay. Any ideas on a good fit, preferably August 12-28th?

"Beautiful Days" on weekend of August 19 is exactly what you are looking for

Not sure about staying off site, though. British festivals are typically in the middle of nowhere and that is very much part of the appeal, so if you want to "do" a British festival camping with the great unwashed is pretty central to the experience - buy yourself a modest tent and get stuck in!

A lot of our festivals tend to be held in rural areas so the staying offsite may be difficult for most. My advice would be to look for an event held in an inner city surrounding. However if you want to avoid the city I might advise Wilderness Festival. Has a folksy vibe and is quintessentially British. They offer boutique accommodation (think posh tents and wagons) or there are some B&Bs offsite (the nearest about 6 miles).

Was just going to say this. Couldn't agree more. Sounds perfect for you apart from i'm not sure on staying off site. @Bill Jenkins are you totally against on site camping?
