beodeejay
What they should have done is had the good grace to stick a co credit, or somehow acknowledge that there was a starting point that others had done. Many of the blues stuff exists in several versions before them. Others did this - Rory Gallagher, who arguably was too coy in claiming work as his own, and used 'Trad, Arr Gallagher' for some stuff that was really all his own. Dylan asked him for the source of Could've had religion, as it sounds like a standard, as was credited as 'Trad' on a live LP in 1972 - but really it was a Gallagher original, with just a hint of an older story. Loads of this around - look at Paul Simon & Martin Carthy with Scarborough Fair. Simon did the right thing ... eventually. Page & Plant should have co-credited Spirit, and could probs have agreed a one off payment, or small ongoing royalty that none of them would have ever noticed. Now all this is dragged up, tarnishing them and their massive achievements.
The Nal
They get a bit of an unfair deal though. "Everyone nicks it" as Plant said. Robert Johnson was accused of it in the mid 30s.
zero000
We all know who the biggest thieves of all time are... London Calling: Common People: The Universal: They all make Jimmy Page look like the first cave man to smear Mammoth shit on a cave wall.
