I'm traveling from Wales and normally use gate D. whats the best route to take to park as close to gate A this year?

M5 - A39 which is probably the same as you went last year.

You just need to head to gate A rather than gate D to queue.

A39 route is best to get you to the car parks that serve A and D gates. But most car parks on that side are probably closer to gate D than A. The Coach park is by A and only limited parking reasonably close to that gate

If you are meeting people at A or planning to camp near there you might be best going in through D anyway, and walking through the festival rather than round the parimiter. Have a look at the map and ask stewards when you park up which gate is closest
