@Quark sounds interesting, hope it goes well!

@lucyginger for the venues we wanted something that isn't typical wedding. Tried a couple of warehouse spaces but discovered that hiring tables and chairs is pricey. Tried a museum called Kelham Island and hated the price for a party. So opted to try gig spaces / recording studios. We have opted to hire out a recording studio which has a gig venue / event space attached onto it. Richard Hawley uses the space and the Arctics recorded some of their stuff there. It's pretty cool and will stay open till 2am if we want. Given that we will be wanting a band to play (any recommendations for bands that aren't pricey but are good?) I'm sure we have some people who have booked bands previously who might be able to help?

Ta muchly!

I remember when we started with wedding venues and plans we were determined to do something a bit different.  But gradually we realised that, in some cases, traditional is actually the established way to do it because it works! Worked for us anyway :) Recording studio sounds like a banger of plan though!

In an effort to keep my options open I'm also booking myself onto an open day at the local agricultural college! I see a taster session of Landscaping and Horticulture coming up next week!

I think we knocked tradition on the head with the decision to have the ceremony in the USA with just us two. Not quite an elopement because people know about it but a private wedding with pretty scenery. I've realised what a rip off wedding relate things are. I've debated just doing wedding planning, I could charge a lot of money! (Selling my soul for money but you know, it pays for things!)

You are keeping your options open but I think that's the best way. You'll find something you really enjoy this way :)

Well, being in an office has never been my cup of tea.  I love being outdoors.  And I like gardening but wish I was better at it! Wins all round!

For all the pain in the backside planning and paying through the nose, I did love our wedding and couldn't have imagined it without family and friends there.  My mum had enough of an issue with it being on a Friday instead of a Saturday though!! But the main thing is it's your day, and ultimately to hell with whatever anyone else wants or thinks :D

Hello Sheffieldlady,

No idea about bands. Perhaps an advert in the local paper asking for bands to submit a recording of their work and see how that goes. Just a thought.

Here's an idea you could plagiarise to your own requirements if you are having a sit down meal for guests (now you are talking expensive);

The venue sounds great! I'm not the marrying sort but I do like a wedding that's a bit different.

My birthday was going to be a big affair this year, as I don't plan to have a wedding ever, but it's not a fallow year now so I've had a rethink! Might have a big do for my 41st next year instead :)

We had a fantastic day at our wedding. This was a surprise to me because although I knew the venue was going to be top notch, I just thought that the day would actually be a drag. How wrong I was. It was lovely to have my immediate family, my wife's family, and our friends there. I think it helped because we made sure that all the booze was free throughout the whole day. In fact, this was a stipulation of my wife's ie no free booze for guests, no wedding. It helped that the venue as a wedding venue was relatively new to the game, and that we chose to hold it on a Thursday not a Saturday. It also had a lovely feeling because it was held near the Glastonbury festival in East Pennard, and that we knew that we'd be going to the festival the following month as part of our honeymoon proceedings. Here's the site here;

http://www.pennardhouse.com/somerset-wedding-venue/

I must say that on the day of the wedding we were on our way out of the venue at 11.00am (with the wedding due to take place AT 2.30PM) when the son of the owner stopped us in our campervan and asked where on earth we were going. When we told him that we were just off to buy the ring in Shepton Mallet he nearly fainted. We had originally had a ring made in the Birmingham Jewellery Quarter but when we gave them the specification and they showed us the ring that they'd made, they didn't match in any way shape or form. We told the posh bloke who owned the jewellers that the ring wasn't what we had asked of his assistant, and he said that it was - even though he wasn't even at the discussion about the ring and our requirements. To cut a long story short, my then fiance lost her temper and told the bloke, quite literally, to 'go fuck himself'. I suspect that we are one of an elite group of people who have actually been thrown out of a jewellers.

Sorry to bang on, but the lead up to and actual wedding really was one of the greatest highlights in my life.

Thanks Yog, no sit down meal, just going to get some street food van to park in the court yard and give everyone wedding cake for dessert. A friend is making the cake so thankfully, we don't have to spend 100s on a bit of cake! I do like that table plan though!

Your wedding party sounds ace to me so far. I'd say that people will really enjoy the 'difference' in terms of venue, street food etc. I mean, just about everybody has gone to a 'normal' wedding before so yours will stand out. After our wedding we were overrun by people coming up to us to say that it was the best wedding that they'd ever been to. I suspect that yours will fall in to the same category for many a guest.

Not sure how much they charge, but I'd recommend New York Brass Band. Saw them at the outside circus stage last June, and they were great fun.

I've never had a career but have had plenty of different jobs. Mainly though I've just tried to get as much of my retirement in as soon as I can.

If education is wasted on the young, so too retirement is wasted on the elderly.

Mine is def a job, not a career! I'd like to retire now. Maybe I'll buy a lottery ticket later!

I bought one of those today as well!  I never bother with the lottery, so my brain seems to assume that if I buy a ticket then winning is just a formality. God knows why.

I struggle with the difference between job and career. Interchangeable for me really!

I shall. careershifters.org if you're interested.

It'll mainly be interesting to see if it's worth the money!!

I wonder what the people at Careershifters did before they realised that they didn't want to do that any longer? Also, where did they go for advice on how to shift their careers to being that of a career shifter. That must be a very niche market, and if it isn't saturated then maybe people who go to careershirfters for advice could oust the very people that are advising them on the way to do it.

I'm the same! I hardly ever buy lottery tickets or scratchcards, so get right royally cheesed off when I don't win!!

Job = something that hopefully you don't hate, and that pays the bills

career = something you actually train for and as Scruff says, try to progress in.

I have a job, luckily I like it.

All sounds sensible enough to me.

As for pre-caeershifters Yog I've read a few bits in their blog about that.  I think they were basically unsatisfied people who had enough of recruitment agencies pointing them in the same old directions. Like anyone who sets up a new venture I guess they saw a market opening and filled it!

Like I said it may end up to be a massive waste of money, but equally it could be the best "career" thing I've done since I decided which A-levels to do!

It's alright. I do that everytime I buy one too, end up being annoyed that somehow, I didn't win when surely it is 'my turn'

For me a career would be a job you enjoy that you want to actively progress up the ladder in - not just for monetary gain but also enjoyment. A job is what I do, whether or not I get promoted I ain't gonna look forward to coming into the office.

I know that's not strictly true, but that's what I see the difference as

I agree Scruffy, the idea of being promoted isn't really a motivator for me - I thought it would be, or I don't think I would've bothered with university.

Hello Ben.

Sorry to hear that today is the day that all the little Brummies have decided to descend on you. I was out briefly earlier but wasn't really looking around me to see if I could see children. Thankfully that's not my thing. The reason I was out was because I had completely forgotten about a mobile mechanic that had turned up to my old address in order to fix my campervan. He was there at 10.30am prompt, as agreed,  but I wasn't. Anyway, it's sorted now. We should be getting back our new fully working campervan tomorrow. Then we've got to put it up for sale :( Oh well, we had many fun times in it, and we'll get another one in the future when the time is right.

Hope that the stress isn't getting to you too much. I think that we are all agreed on here that you do a wonderful job. :)
