I went to University for a year and a bit. I left at about the three week stage in the second year. I simply couldn't stand the place any longer. While there I listened to The Smiths on a continuous loop all night long one night and then, in the morning, concluded 'fuck this for a game of soldiers' and went in to the university and told them that I was leaving, and then did so. There were parts of university life that were, on reflection, quite interesting, but none of those moments were academic.

Later in life I went to a polytechnic to do a degree.in building surveying. On the first day there the head of the department said to us that we were going to learn X amount of information over the following three years, but that he could guarantee that 99% of it was going to be useless to us in our later lives. And guess what - (1) I fucked off and left that course too, (2) what bit of information I did garner there was never of any use in later life, so I can confirm, to a degree, that he was bang on right.

I eventually ended up in a large organisation that although a charity was a charity with assets of over £1 billion. I soon learnt that it was staffed at the higher echelons by people who were remedial, corrupt, inefficient, thick etc etc. I also learnt that if your face didn't fit then you weren't going to join them up there in that heady atmosphere of senior management. Luckily I had no intention of doing that under any circumstances - I actually (and here's remedial for you!) wanted to stay at the coal face. I simply couldn't (and still wouldn't be able to) justify my position by being a person who creates statistics on what their staff are doing to an upper level of management, purely as their only task. That said, I must admit to having a weakness for pie charts, but really only outside the work environment. I look on it like a Pacman type thingy, and want to know who has eaten all of the pie.

Anyway, a word of advice to any young people out there just about to start their journey in life - brush up on your English vocabulary. When you drop in 'fancy' words in meetings with senior staff, who can barely write their names, they are back footed. If you want a career then make sure that you follow up your fancy words by dropping the fucking idiots in it. If you don't do this then they'll be scared of your vocabulary and will try to shut you down. Well, that's my experience anyway, and I'd bet my gonads that it's universal.

Disagree with this though. Uni has been absolutely no help careerwise for me, but was the best 4 years of my life, and I learned so much, just not necessarily academically.

Oh - academically and career wise uni was pretty useless. Life wise it was great. That's how I met my other half, made some life friends. Learned to cook, budget and some other valuable life lessons. Just phased badly.

I have enjoyed reading your career / job stories.

@fatyeti24 what was in this room? If there is one room you've not seen I bet they'll be more! Maybe a secret door?

I got a degree doing computer stuff and then started a career doing computer stuff, what a maverick.  Worked out ok for me, but then again I was the last year not to pay fees.  It's so expensive these days that I don't think I'd recommend it to someone these days.  College/6th Form sure, but university?  It just doesn't seem worth it today.

Woah, woah woah woah - no Cherry BakewellTM ????  Have you quite taken leave of your senses?? Are you planning to buy all your drinks at the bar?  That stuff is super strong and super lethal, surely that would be one of the last things to go?

I think an intervention is necessary to stop a festacular tragedy!  What are you planning to bring, if Cherry Bakewell doesn't make the cut?

S2H, this made me sit up and listen to my stupidity! You're absolutely right. I can't do Glastonbury without Cherry Bakewell. I was going to bring Sambucca for night time and buy drinks there as the weight on my back last year through that mud was blooming awful! (not as awful as @lucyginger ribs!) ive already gone through my packing list and stripped it to absolute essentials but not much has been removed haha.

@thurlow84 I hadn't thought that far ahead, but I thought searching was a bit more thorough last year and I got caught twice and I hate being found out to be breaking rules. I was always such a swot at school and never did anything wrong. Being told off by people in authority genuinely scares me  I may bring a little bit and hide it in small pouches around my body. We will see

Phew!  I'm very glad to hear this!  I've been checking this thread obsessively and have been unable to sleep for fear of you making a terrible mistake*.  Besides, there's not going to be any m*d this year.  Note that I have censored your post in quoting it.  What kind of tent are you using?  That can often be the heaviest single item.  I bet the efests hive mind can help you get the packing down if you start a thread.

*Only a slight exaggeration.

Love your faith Stu.  We both know that it will start off as a helpful thread before descending into utter chaos including Trump, Brexit, Radiohead albums and innuendo.

My friends are taking our tent so I'm taking spirits for them in exchange. So weight in my hand is less but up on my back. Thanx for the edit and sorry for scaring you haha.

So far we've only drilled a hole in the boarded up door but it seems there's just old gas bottles and paint cans in there. Fingers crossed for some treasure though!

It's all gone a bit Famous Five. Jolly exciting!

Love all the "life" stories, and I love that you found a new room Yeti!

I do not love the fact that I looked up how long it would take me to get to yours and it's fecking ages.

I would suggest flying but know that's a crap suggestion for you with being all scaredy of flying. Will be worth the drive for the views and gin though.
