You win.

The strange thing is, my dad had some good music in his collection. Pink Floyd, Genesis, early Elton John, Mike Oldfield etc, but for some reason he thought I would prefer Shakin' Stevens, Huey Lewis and Chicago. It's a miracle I've developed any taste at all, really.

The only other records I recall my parents having were by Irish singers like Brendan Shine etc. If you haven't experienced this particular genre - then don't. I wouldn't want the guilt of having 'soiled' you in some way.

To be fair, it wouldn't be the first time I'd been 'soiled' by a member of the NFR bunch. Probably won't be the last, either!

When I was young, my Dad (who had by then buggered off to Canada) recorded the (up to that point) entire Genesis back catalogue onto old medical education cassettes and sent them to me in a shoebox. One of my most vivid childhood memories. I used to listen to them on my old mono cassette player, whilst in the bath. Foxtrot was the first one out of the box, and so will always had a special place in the heart of my life's musical journey. Gabriel at his most Gabriel, I'd say. I still love the record today, even though I am very unlikely to play it (just too much new wonderful music being made every day!). It'll never replace The Lamb at the Top of my Genesis Pops, but then very few records will ever displace that from my desert island.

:)

Ben

The lamb is another really great album Ben, both that and selling England by the pound invoke memories of a misspent youth :) my parents weren't really into music but I had an uncle who played bread, Crosby stills Nash and young and Neil diamond a lot, I'm still very fond of all of them. I think my mum would have loved leftfield and fatboy slim, she loved to dance but sadly didn't do it enough. I think that's why I dance as often as I can, in my kitchen mostly :):):)

I got pretty lucky with parents' music. Simon & Garfunkel, Motown, Carole King, James Taylor, Carpenters, Dylan, Beatles, Quo, ELP. The blot on the landscape was my mum's love for Streisand, but even that holds a nostalgic spot in my heart!

Ah Quark you've got me singing now and I tell you I can murder "something in the way she moves" like no one else can  ;)

I have just (well, about an hour ago) finished making my seventh crucifix with a depiction of Jesus on it. I make the crosses and body out of scrap and salvaged materials. I'm not sure why I make them, but do know that the finished product makes me happy - as does the process of making them.

Anyway, I went on a search to see if anybody is making anything similar and I can't see that anybody is. While searching I found a site devoted to religious (Christian) pilgrim art. I thought the bloke running it may want to see my crosses, so have just emailed him photos of them. I have informed him that there is no intention to upset anybody or mock the religion, and that it's just my art. I think he'll be OK with most of them, but fear that the one crucifix with a toy doll on it with a hypodermic syringe sticking out of where the head should be, might just challenge his willingness to not be offended. Time will tell. I do hope he writes back one way or another.

In other news, I had to drive to London and back yesterday late afternoon in to the night. Bit of a pain in the arse, especially the getting lost bit, but it had to be done.

Hi all, hope everybody enjoyed their weekends and your Mondays don't seem too long. I'm settling in back at work for the next 6 weeks but I have working internet this time so I shouldn't be so much of a stranger!:)

Quark, it sounds like you were pretty lucky with your parents musical tastes. I pretty much grew up with Country (Johnny Cash, Marty Robbins, Jim Reeves, that sort of stuff) and that was the sole genre I knew when I was a kid. It wasn't really until I hit the latter years of primary school and I started listening to radio that I realised there was a whole world of music out there.

Good luck with the house Yog, I think you might need it. Will keep my fingers crossed that it slips under the radar of most people.

Shaun.

Hello Shaun

Thanks for the good luck wishes. As you say. I think I'm going to need luck on my side. I'll not be too down hearted if I don't get it though. No point really.

That's the way, if you go in with no expectations, anything positive is a bonus. Let us know how you get on.

Morning all!

Quiet weekend was had here, which was nice. I did quite a lot of sitting down, which is always good! I'm going to start being more active next weekend, that'll be 6 weeks after my op then so I can start to do things. I really want to start running again, but will take it slowly!

Lovely weather here today. Really blue sky and lots of sunshine! It's very pleasant :)

Hi everyone

My weekend was a little bit frustrating as I spent quite a bit of it sitting...which as you know is generally anathema to me!

Still, I've been on a run and walked the dog already, am now at work briefly to do some teaching, then home to find lots of 'stuff' to do!

And I've got a new shed coming on Thursday. Which is nice.

Hope all tickety boo in NFRLand

:)

Hi everyone

Haven't posted for a while, lot of family stuff going on etc. It's getting nearer now, so thought I'd pop back in here. far too much to go through since I was last in, but I've been keeping an eye on it incognito as it were. Anyway - a book you might be interested in Ben

Thanks, ToS!

Though so depressing do I find the entire 50SOG thing that I might even struggle to overcome my ire adequately to tolerate a parody! I have nothing against erotica at all, but the sensationalist, Carry On-level tabloid cheapness that surrounds this recent, ahem, literature is anathema to me.

Too grumpy? I hope not! Annoyingly, the course I was supposed to be teaching on today (and the only reason for trekking into work) had been cancelled. Unbeknownst to me...grrrrr.

Still, off to the orthodontist in a bit for Child 3 to get his (now NHS-perfectly straight) teeth back, so that's exciting. He's going to look even more of a dish! Ugh.

Then Pilates, during which I shall let out my cancelled-course anger yin and allow back in my peaceful yang. And no, no Finbarrs are appropriate there, I thang yoo.

Ben x

@H.M.V it's been a couple of months since I was round, how's the house coming along? Are you any closer to getting it sorted? Hoping you're both well on your way now and you e settled in properly.

Shaun.

Hi Shaun

Not too much change. We've had a lot of surveys done to understand the level of work required. It's a lot but could have been a lot worse. We still dont have a cooker or kitchen. But we are getting gas in the not to distant future, we discovered a new murder room and we had a wood burner installed yesterday which is absolutely gorgeous and roastie toastie.

Hows things over in your neck of the woods?

I have to say, the 50 Shades thing is awful! I saw the first film, I have never shouted at the screen so much! It's full of non consent, him stalking her, he is controlling, he gets cross when she wants to see her friends, and altogether is the worst depiction of the BDSM lifestyle I have ever come across, if you'll pardon the phrase!

Rant over!

Blimey have I hit a nerve here inadvertently with both Ben & Lucy? Really sorry!!! The whole 50SOG thing isn't my idea of entertainment either; I haven't read the book or seen the film, but did think - from what I know of it - it was crying out for a parody.

No offence intended lovely peeps!
