NFR NFC 2017 - The friendly thread for lovely people

*waves*  Morning everyone.  Happy Monday to us all. Staying on that AirBnB on the farm sounds good @Skoo the only time we've been there apart from the festival was to the festival run, weird seeing it without all the people, tents, stages etc.

I honestly don't know now if we'll make it to the festival this year, we are so skint.  It's a case of be careful what you wish for.  Having wanted so long for a builder to turn up and start fixing chimneys or roof, now it's actually happening one day I'm 'we're going anyway' B), the next day I'm 'oh god there's so not enough money for everything'.  Have decided to decide nearer to resale date, keeping my options open.

Nothing in particular planned for this week, just more DIY and to Taunton to collect new cricket bat - I spend a lot of my summer sat watching cricket, both kids play it.

Well I'm currently out in the Middle East where it's supposed to average 1 weeks rainfall per year. After 4 and a half weeks out here it's put rain down almost every day! I know it's a different country and all but surely that has to count?

That definitely counts! We're probably covered til Thursday now!

Feel like I'm having a bit of a mid-life crisis that my Glastonbury days might be numbered. Really hope not, I love the place, I've had some of the best times of my life there. It's the only festival that I've been to where the lineup feels quite secondary. I mean, it'd take something special to get me back to Leeds, V or Isle of Wight again but Glastonbury is Glastonbury. More often than not I'm happy to wander and see what happens. When I go through the lineups I don't give myself a schedule or anything, usually there's half a dozen acts that I definitely don't wanna miss, then god, probably 50 that I'd like to see but not gonna be a weekend ruiner if I don't see em. I know this leaked lineup today isn't official, not yet anyway, but if it's a hoax hats off, quite an effort there.

Not tried to get tickets this year, unlikely to as just got too much on as it is. Hope last year isn't my last but struggle to see how much longer I can keep going. Alright, it's only 15 years since my first Glastonbury so the change I've seen is nothing compared to the change others will have. I used to feel like I belonged at Glastonbury, but last couple of times I'm not so sure, think I'm pretty close to being priced out of the festival. I'm sure people being able to afford to spend hundreds of pounds on camping equipment and just leaving it behind is nothing new, it's just been more noticeable to me cos I do have to scrimp and save to make it to Glastonbury, more than I used to, and I get the impression that that puts me in the minority. It's always been a privilege to go, never been so much of a luxury.

I dunno even know what I'm getting at here. If I can't go again, I'll miss the place.

Hi Richard you sound a bit low, so maybe there's other stuff going on in life that makes Glastonbury seem less important?  That doesn't mean you have to stop going, but perhaps a different way of doing it would help.  Possibly an obvious/stupid question, but have you considered going as a volunteer?  You might see more of the proper Glastonbury spirit then.  Two things made the festival less all-consuming for me.  We couldn't get tickets in 2014, which seemed an unbearable bereavement and like being cast out of the family, but we went to Latitude and saw the Black Keys and the world didn't end. Then my son stopped going to school 4 days before T day in 2015, and his problems have eclipsed everything since.  But that doesn't mean Glastonbury isn't important.  It's just not the most important thing, which is as it should be.

Sending you warm hugs.

I know I've been a bit absent so can't really claim the right, but a bit less of the r**n word please MJ!  Also now wondering if you're likely to bring the soggy stuff with you to the farm as you seem such a magnet for it. I'm just as bad though - only 1 dry Glastonbury in the 7 I've been to.

Had some major brain fade today.  On the way out of the door to collect youngest from Outreach school,  I couldn't find the car keys and then remembered they were with the car - which was at the garage having the brakes done.  The job was only supposed to take an hour or so and the mechanic was meant to call me when it was done but forgot,  so I completely forgot the car wasn't on the drive. 10 minute sprint down the road to get the car, and I rushed off,  by now late to collect my son.  On the way the windows kept misting up and the air conditioning wouldn't work (for some reason opening the windows takes forever to clear them, so I now reluctantly use the aircon).  Wondering how they could damage the aircon while changing the brake pads,  I determined to insist they fix it before I pay the bill.  Just before arriving back home I realised the fan was set to zero, which was why the aircon wouldn't switch on...

Some really uplifting stuff on here while I've been absent - so glad you're in a good place now despite what sounds like a horrible childhood @Curlygirl@lucyginger how's the drug experimentation going now? @bennyhana22 I criminally let Spaced pass me by and only watched a few episodes, so will definitely revisit. @Yoghurt on a Stick I hope the offer on the house comes good.  @trevethin I do hope you're able to make it to the farm, and @Skoo enjoy your visit, @Ommadawn I have that Mike Oldfield album and rather love it. @mr gumby why are you tasting wee?  Warm hugs to everyone.

Doesn't sound like much, but yesterday youngest was able to get out of the car when we were in the school grounds - the first time he's actually set foot there since late 2015.  He said he wanted to do it on his own,  so I watched from the car and cried a bit.

I would echo dizzymoo's suggestion about volunteering. Worth looking in to I'd say.

Hello dizzymoo,

It's hardly a surprise, I'm sure, but I tend to get a few brain fade moments every day. I'll find myself halfway up the stairs and realise that I no longer know why I am going up the stairs.

The potential buyers haven't come back to the estate agents yet, but I expect to hear something tomorrow. Keeping my fingers crossed.

That was courageous of your son. Happy to hear that he managed it.

In other news, I have now come around to feeling normal again after my wife's birthday celebrations on Saturday night. They finally finished at about 4pm on the Sunday. I had thought they'd go on longer but am glad they didn't, as I wouldn't have had the strength to go on.

Yeah fair enough Dizzy, I did want to change it as I know how even a mention of the damp stuff can rightly send people on here apoplectic at times but I had already pressed send. I'll consider myself suitably chastised and you can rest assured it won't happen again. Oh and no need to worry about me bringing it to the farm just at the moment, I haven't got my ticket yet!

Ooh well done on your youngest with school. It sounds like he's moving forward and really wants to get through it.:)

In other news, I'm down to 3 weeks left at work and I can safely say I'm going home this month!

Have a lovely Tuesday everyone.

Shaun.

Hoorah for going home, MJ!

It's a bit grey today here, but getting a bit warmer, which is nice. There are loads of crocuses out in my local park, they are beautiful! I love all the daffodils too, they are my favourite flower. So cheerful!

Hope everyone has a nice Tueaday :)

I wouldn't know a crocuses if I tripped over one Lucy. They're all Rhododendrons to me. I don't know what one of them looks like either, I just like the word!:)

I do know what a daffodil is though.

They shouldn't drag too much, once I get past the 4 week stage the last 4 tend to pass pretty quickly. I look at it like I've only got 6 shaves left before I go home!:)

Hello all,

It's a lovely sunny day here and warm with it too. Today started well because the Dyson engineer came out and fixed our vacuum. Mrs Yog is now well pleased as she loves the vacuum. In fact, she loves it that much that she thinks it can do anything - including vacuuming the cellar floor! I mean, who vacuumes a cellar floor? No wonder it packed in working about half an hour after that little excursion.

I think that the estate agent might be playing games a little. It would take too long to explain my reasoning, but I've just sent them an email to negate any games that they might be playing.

I've got shed loads of personal admin to do, but keep on finding excuses not to do it. The tax man keeps sending letters and it's about time that I paid heed to them - especially as they owe me a considerable amount of money and not the other way around.

Well, I think my suspicions were right regarding the estate agents (or at least one employee). The person that I sent an email to on Friday just claimed in a phone call not to have received it, and then later in the conversation admitted to having received it. She went on to say that was she OK in assuming that I didn't want any more viewings on my property. Why on earth would I want to stop viewings that could potentially lead to more money being offered on the property? It doesn't add up. I reckon (but have no proof obviously) that she might be mates with one couple who have put an offer in. She's falling all over herself for me to accept their offer, even, incredulously, if it's not going to be the best offer for me. I'm going to wait until she comes back to me again before reacting.

@RichardWaller

without re-quoting your post, I'd also say volunteering is worth looking into.

we started getting that 'are we done with Glastonbury' feeling going on after about 2010. I think we had such a great run of headliners in the few years up to then that it just got harder for it to be bettered.

Then it has become a case of dong something different with Glastonbury, or something different without it.

so - other things that have helped me to keep enjoying it...

stop doing it every year - that's fantastic for a while but it's not supposed to be a routine thing to do, so after a while if it becomes a routine thing to do, it is almost bound to lose something. Enjoying this forum it is easy for it to feel a bit like taking a year off makes you a bit less Glastonbury, and almost feel guilty about taking time out. I wanted to keep being one of those 'every year' people, but there's nothing wrong with a year or two out to bring some novelty back.

take someone different with you. Not just a different friend, but a differnt type of person. We took my mum twice, she was nearly 70! For others taking children the first time gives it a whole different look

try some other festivals, not the big ones you've mentioned but some smaller ones that offer that 'nice friendly people' vibe that Glastonbury has always been known for, or something with a really different character like Festibval no 6 - I bet you've seen nearly every band you want to see in your 15 years anyway, so do you need big names now?  Try Beautiful Days, Kendal, Bearded Theory....or something abroad like Sziget which we loved so much last year we didn't try for Glastonbury this year, we just decided immediately that we'd go there again!

This year I am volunteering at Glastonbury because I don't want to give up on it, and I am going to give a different way of doing it a try. Sziget, staying just off site in a proper bed, near a sunny site, with people from all over the world has become our main festival 'holiday' for now, but I've found a way to stay with Glastonbury too. I hope you do too. x

Oh no, I'm fine! Was just feeling a bit nostalgic when I wrote that post, got me thinking about about the times and people I've missed and the times and people I should've let go of long before I did. I guess that post was my version of Krapp's Last Tape.. Got wondering in many ways, whether my best years in this or that are gone.. Suppose out of the major festivals, Glastonbury is the only one that you can't be too old for, which is great. But I feel like there are other ways that could kinda isolate you a bit, too reserved, too working class, not educated enough.. Like I said in me first post, always a privilege but never been such a luxury.

I have considered volunteering but got mixed feelings about that too.. When I do go, Glastonbury is generally my main holiday of the year and I know it sounds selfish, but I want as much time there as possible to be my own. Can't even count the number of petitions I've signed at the festival, but I'm not the kinda guy who'd be suited to recruiting for that kinda thing. If anything, I could see myself litter picking, I'd probably enjoy that and find it quite satisfying until I walk past the same place a few hours later.. Aye, had a few gaps myself too, been 7 times in 15 years, longest gap being 2004-2010 and after that break it just felt magical. I probably will go again, even if it's on my own. Sod it, just this minute fired off an application for recycling crew.

I've always seen Glastonbury headliners as the tip of the iceberg rather than other festivals where the headliners could make or break it. I probably would go every year if I could, but it wouldn't be without its sacrifices. Finally getting my finances into some sort of order to the extent that I was able to afford both, Glastonbury last year and a four day break in Berlin in the September. That would've been unthinkable a few years ago! Didn't even have a passport wither... We've just booked to go away this September to Krakow, return flight and a week in a hotel for the same price of a Glastonbury ticket.. I can see why Glastonbury has achieved a bucket list status, it's so expensive!

My visit to Festival No6 was badly timed, not as swampy as last year's Glastonbury but seemed to want to give it a run for the money. Aye, will look at other festivals too but one thing that puts Glastonbury head and shoulders above any other festival is, and I think Emily Eavis has said something along these lines herself... The Park alone is like another festival in itself. From Greenfields and West Holts to Pyramid, Shangri-La, Dance Village and the Stone Circle... it is like going to half a dozen festivals in a week. As for going with other people, I can only think of a few people I'd want to take along who haven't been.. Couple of my best mates are proper festival grinches now, and last year was my wife's first Glastonbury so she's keen to give it a wide berth for a while! After seven festivals and watching loads of documentaries and reading loads of other accounts of the place, I'm still no closer to putting into words what the Glastonbury spirit is. Can't describe it, but there's a recurring feeling I get every time I'm there that I've never had anywhere else and I wish I could stick it in a bottle.

I've just applied for recycling crew, don't think it'll happen though. There was a box asking for a person who's recommended you, don't know anyone who's done it. Know a few who've done stewarding but if I'm gonna be stuck out in a car park I'd rather not bother.

Cheers, all.

Sunny afternoon y'all, managing to leave hibernation now these blue skies appear. Been a bit of an apathetic downturn over a long period of time and not had positive things to share, but after months of effort MrsCJ has some treatment planned for her ailments and I have a new job and can leave the management that I don't want to work for.

@dizzymoo, @Richard Waller, very warm handshakes in what's going on, and others that I've missed over the past posts.

That is all x.

Hello! Hope everyone is ok!

I went to a shooting range last night. It was a xmas gift experience thing. I spent an hour firing an air rifle at targets and it was fun!

Hi Lucy, it's been ages since a shot anything. I used to love shooting and I was pretty darn good at it. In fact, I got a trophy when I was in the Navy. They nicely presented it full of port. That was a drunken night.
