Freecycle's always good as well, got rid of our old double glazing that way.

The other one I found when I emptied the garage was a guy who worked at improving local youth clubs & social centres as they were always on the lookout for any decorating materials.

I use Freecycle! It is good. I might pop a few things on there, thanks for the reminder!

We've got a Barnardo's depot type thing near us so I usually take stuff there. They can gift aid it too, so that's good. I picked up a festival trolley over a week ago, it's still in the car as I have no room at home for it yet, so need to get rid of things quick!!

I would just like to confirm that painting and decorating is a most excruciatingly painful experience. Dante's Inferno doesn't come close to describing the agony. And guess what, I may have to do some major decorating soon. Aaaagh

Ergh! It is horrible, I do like it when it's done (our kitchen is looking sooo much better) but crikey I have tons of crap I need to get rid of! Good luck with yours, Yog!

Cheers lucy. I've done up a lot of houses in my time so have had to do plenty of painting and decorating. There has been times in the past where I've thought to myself that I'd rarther be in prison than doing this. So, you can see how much I'm looking forward to it.

It's the only, literally (and I'm using that correctly) the only, thing that Mrs Q and I bicker about.  As soon as a paintbrush is even looked at we get started.

Give me garden improvements any day.

That's bad. You must get near to having a stroke when visiting somewhere like B & Q. It's an awefully un PC thing to say, but I suggest you put blinkers on her the next time you go to one of them shops.

I wish it was that simple!

She's very much an 80% get it done, doesn't have to be perfect type.  I get sucked into detail and can spend half an hour getting a cutting line between wall and skirting board absolutely square.  Unfortunately I'm also not very good.

So I start out at a point of frustration before we've even begun, and any question hits my suddenly thin skin like a massive criticism!

The other side is that she'll come in to get stuck in and destroy the work I've already done by being less than careful!

The general formula is to let her loose on stuff like sanding and first coats, then I take over for the finishing.

Maybe you should agree not to do decorating together, it works for me and mrs gumby. We're the same with cooking, we both realise that we have different approaches to it, and would drive each other mad, so we never cook together.

Sounds like you and I are very similar, and so are our respective other halves!

Can't imagine decorating after a smoke.  I'd get as far as getting the stuff out of the garage, then sit on the sofa to recover and end up watching tv

Once you get going it's ok. I think the trick is to get started, have a smoke, then continue. Then have a sit down!

As we all know, I lead a sheltered and puritanical life so have had to look up lady gardening. I must say that I'm shocked, but not as shocked as I was to find out the meaning of The Cleveland Steamer.

As they say, every day is a school day.  I have one question (well many actually) Yog:  how did you get from the genteel art of bush topiary to this?

Cleveland steamer ‎(plural Cleveland steamers) (slang) A sexual act involving defecating on someone's chest, then sitting in it and rolling back and forth like a steamroller.

I must be as innocent as you... how is this a sexual act?

But I did get this wonderful result from googling 'lady gardening':

Lady gardening pioneers in a man's world - Telegraph

23 Oct 2010 - Following in the footsteps of talented female gardeners; Ladies in big hats who certainly directed gardens, but few got down and dirty for colour ...

How's it going Yog?  I mean life in general rather than any specific gardening projects!

Hello dizzymoo

Well, I'm on the tale end of a speed bender which has seen me get very little sleep in several days. I did get some sleep last night though, but woke up this morning so nervous that I thought I'd jump out of my own skin at any point during the day. On top of that I really wanted to get stuff done today but the day has just disappeared. I have had some good news though in that a little venture that I recently started has brought some money in. It's not a lot of money but it shows me that my system is working at least - from small acorns great oak trees will grow, as the saying goes.

Another major development in my life is that we are going to be leaving our house shortly and moving in to a house adjoining the shop. The reason for this is that we own this house outright and will let it out at a reasonably higher cost than the rental on the other house. This will give us another income source, plus things like the Council tax will be cheaper etc. The downside of this is that during a wealthy period in my life I bought things like a mad man. This means that I have a house, garage and back garden full of stuff which needs to go somewhere as it'll not fit in to where we are moving to. Also, I'm really not looking forward to moving some of the stuff from one property to the other.

Apart from that lot I remain in high spirits, although this is probably down to congenital idiocy rather than circumstance.

How are things with you and yours?

Glad you're in high spirits and some new sources of income are appearing.  Could you sell some of the stuff you've accumulated?  I wonder if some of the people who habitually turn up at your house could help with moving?  Like a sort of peripatetic barn-raising party.

I'm doing ok which is odd given that I usually find this time of year deeply depressing,  and there have been lots of annoyances including clients not turning up and youngest managing to lose some assessed work in his computer somewhere (again). He seems to be feeling better and at least attempting to focus on work and getting the GCSEs  he needs to go on to do A levels.  I'm supposed to be clearing out eldest's room and redecorating completely while he's away - but don't know where to start.

Having almost exhausted my obsession with 'Currents',  I've moved on to 'Innerspeaker',  which doesn't impress so much, apart from this which just blows my mind:

I will get some friends to help out if they are able, but much of it will need to be done during the day when they are at work. I'll also ask my brothers for help too. It'll get done but I fear that I'll be doing the most of it.

It's a shame about your youngest losing his work on the computer. My stepson built a website for the shop and all was well. Then he went to alter one small thing and he lost the lot. He'd been working on it for a month too in his spare time. It's positive that your youngest is focusing more on his work though.

I've never knowingly heard Tame Impala but will give it a shot and listen to It's Not Meant to Be. However, I'll have to do that tomorrow because I'm not mentally able to deal with new music right now.

All the best.

When your mind is receptive listen to 'Let it Happen'  too (the 7 minute version not the edited one).  I heard it as I was wandering between the John Peel and Mocha Mania on the Saturday evening this year.  Stupidly didn't stop to listen to the rest of the set as I was trying to find Mr Moo.

Hope you get some sleep.
