I thought you were the boss Grumpy?

Oh Lordy. Is everything OK now grumpy?

I'm the boss and I'm not.  Over the years I've run two businesses - a freelance news agency and then a computer firm that supplied communications systems for the news industry.  But then I had serious health issues and had to have three lots of brain surgery - from which I'm fully recovered.  But the last surgery forced me to quit work and sell the business and I spent six months in the garden recovering and wondering what to do with my life.

So at the suggestion of Mrs GH and my daughters, I decided to go to uni to train to be a teacher.  When I emerged I opted to be an adult and community ed tutor, which has been my main job for the last dozen or so years. Luckily I'm in the financial position where I don't need to work, I do it because I enjoy it, although recently the groups I have been teaching have been pretty disheartening.  One lot are so dull and sad that I call them my planks (though not to their faces).

I still, however, expect to be paid on time each month and my present employers threatened to not process my pay claim this month because some paperwork had gone missing.  So I decided to tell them to stuff their job, which I did yesterday. Miraculously they found the paperwork today (they'd lost it in the first place - though they tried to blame me).  Anyway, lots of apologetic e-mails and olive branch noises from them and I've agreed to finish the courses I'm contracted at present to deliver.

But I think, after that and as the summer and the festival season approaches, I'll politely decline any further offers of work and concentrate on my garden, caravan and festivals.

Sounds like a nice plan grumpy. How many festivals do you go to usually per year, and do you think you'll increase this number with your increased spare time?

I usually do four or five a year Yog, starting with Wychwood, then Glastonbury, Abertillery Blues, Steelhouse at Ebbw Vale and then this year, for the first time, I'll be trying Green Man. I ended up last year with Something Else in The Dean, which I'd like to do again if it's on.

This year I've not managed to get a Glasto ticket so, unless the resales come good, I've got an end of June gap. I've already got and paid for a CV East ticket for Glasto, thanks to help on here, but without a main fest ticket I'll be a bit stuck.

Our festival-going gang has mixed tastes from folk, through blues to heavy metal, so we try to mix it up so there's something for everyone.  The only trouble is that everyone doesn't include Mrs GH, who doesn't share my love of festivals or caravanning.  With increasing issues about the care for her ailing 93 year old mum this year I may be forced to spend a bit more time being a caring and supportive husband.

Glad to hear you got the CV ticket sorted out mate. Was it Mooro's spare one that you got in the end?

Four or five festivals a year is good going. Quite the anti-dote to everyday stresses. I know what you mean about relying on the re-sales. Strangely enough I volunteered on here in the main sale for somebody and got through for them. It was only after this that we decided to give it a shot at going.

I'm happy to hear that you'll be the supportive husband if needs be. It's when MMrs GH will need you the most, I'd say. That you are going to be there for her speaks volumes.

More problems with 94 year old mother in law.  Only took her home yesterday and Mrs GH always rings her at 9pm every night but tonight no reply.  Panic mode after no response for half an hour so we drive to her house (about 30 minutes away) and let ourselves in to discover her stuck in the loo.and unable to get to her feet.  She'd been there for an hour, which is why she'd not been able to get to the phone.

Anyway, she's all sorted now and tucked up in bed for the night.  And if I'm 104% tired, Mrs GH is about 200% tired

Hello grumpy,

Maybe it's time to get her linked to a call monitoring centre, via a device on a cord around her neck? Then if she's stuck or falls etc then she may be able to summon assistance quicker / at all. Hope you don't mind me just thinking out loud. Best wishes.

Old age is a bastard that's for sure grumps. Like Yogs has said, some sort of simple alert system could be the way ahead, plus some discretely fitted handrails so she can steady herself around the house (and get up from the loo).

Hope you find solutions to suit everyone, Its great that she still maintains her independence with a little support from you and your family.
