It's fascinating, because fundamentally, it is a fairly straight bat off Seventeen Going Under. The woah-ohs are now woo-oohs and lower in the mix, there's a flash of The War on Drugs-esque guitar chime to let you know it was cut in LA and that's about it until you get to the bridge.

But that bridge does actually slap. The strings are a grand old touch. I know plenty of people will turn their nose up at him, but Fender clearly understands anthems, no matter the lyrical content, can transcend any widescreen cheesiness on record when bellowed back by a stadium. (I am a fan, and I think some of his material is cracking, but I'm not going to pretend it doesn't veer into kitsch, much like Springsteen can on occasion.)

Just out of interest, what do you think the kitsch Boss songs are?  I have suspected this (love him btw) but rarely see folk bold enough to say it hahaha  And well done on the Fender stadium chat, that was you sharing that wasn't it?  I have a great pal in Newcastle and SJP could be a laugh but I don't know if a whole Fender show would be a bit dull (my pal in Newcastle is quite the muso).

That sax sounded a bit flat. More ooomph needed on the night.

If I was a betting man, I'd say St James' Park (x 2), Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, Old Trafford Cricket Ground and TRNSMT.

Anfield reportedly has just the one show left to announce, and the forums seem convinced it's Lana del Rey.

Having got Glastonbury tickets my attention turned to TRNSMT yesterday as I live in Glasgow and am off that weekend next year. Would make perfect sense for him to do it. Again.

Fender in Leeds a few years ago - the arena - was great crack, but I do get why some might not be on board. The Dying Light is a tune I love, but it's so clearly a Springsteen-style ballad to the point of overkill, while Hypersonic Missiles really falls into it for the massive instrumental break. People Watching has got those Born in the U.S.A.-era synth flourishes slathered beneath the rhythm.

It is a bit lazy to say every soaring sax solo is a Springsteen knock-off - but in these instances, quite a few are. (And I love it.)
