Green Man 2020

But the question is: why? The lineup is far from bad but I feel like there aren't many big draws this year, like Idles last year.

Perhaps it's starting to become like Glastonbury, in that it's developing a  dedicated following who will go regardless of who's playing, because they know it's just a great place?

250,000 people + have just had their festivals cancelled and you're wondering why it's sold out?

I reckon it would have sold out anyway, regardless of Corona.  It did last year.

The general tickets did sell out a day or two after their warning, which was over three weeks ago. This is just notification that settlers passes have sold out. I don't think any festivals here had been cancelled three weeks ago so you're right, its continued success has nothing to do with the virus.

What's the best case scenario for the path of the virus that allows Green Man to go ahead?

No vaccine will be available in time. No possibility for herd immunity. Are we relying on finding some form of reliable treatment or is this about tracing or is there something else that could bale humanity out?

Basically that the current preventative measures means it dies down enough over time that it's not considered an ongoing high level threat at least for the moment and social distancing, major event regulations etc are dialled back. It's believed the numbers of cases will drop significantly after its peak, going by experience in the most affected Asian countries, and with reports that that's most likely to start happening in Italy in the next 7-10 days and we're a couple of weeks behind them on the scientific model... well, let's see, but FWIW at least one of the festivals rescheduled for September say they had official advice that things would have calmed down by then.

Great intel, thanks.

I think the main worry for concerts is that it drops down too slowly and stay at a low level. That can probably only be prevented with drastic measures until we get very few cases. Then I think concerts would be fairly safe, scientifically, but I'm not sure how people would react. If there is a 2nd peak, it would be worldwide, I think there's very little chance of UK up-and-down. That said if the epidemic is still going on in some countries who have not taken any measures in July, things will get more complicated, like we see for China at the moment.

I think it's also how this palaver is in other countries too. I'm not sure what percentage of international acts there is, but I assume it's a fair amount. Who know how, for example, the us are gonna be like on their timeline....

I fear that anything in 2020 will be cancelled.

Bugger.

If they had to cancel a load of acts and rebook more UK artists I'd imagine that no one would care because we'd all be happy just to be outside at a festival.

Heck, at this moment I'd be happy if someone like Black Midi were catapulted up to headline and the Far Out was opened up each day by a random busker from Cardiff.

And in fairness they'd be a lot less badly off than EOTR if all the Americans were forced to pull out, as they'd still have Kiwanuka, Caribou (possibly, Dan lives in London but I don't know if the band do), Little Dragon, Goldfrapp, Agnes Obel and so forth.

When this all finishes every band will want to get out and play gigs. It's going to be relentless. If GM is one of the first major events after lockdown people will be fighting for a set at the festival.

Trying to keep morale up in the face of all festivals being cancelled this summer. Anyone want to play a GM themed recommendation game? I’ll go first:

Favourite song by an artist that has played Green Man: Emily by Joanna Newsom

Favourite song from an artist on this year’s line up that you think people might not have heard: Deep Blue by Caroline (one of my favourite songs of 2020 so far)

A song you like from a band that would be great on the rising stage: England 2 by Famous (similar to BCNR/Black Midi)

Best song you’ve heard at GM: Head On/Pill by King Gizzard (2018)

Song you are/were most looking forward to hearing: Ogre by Richard Dawson

Great idea! I'll do my own later. I haven't got round to listening to Caroline yet, but will now! +1 for Famous - I saw them supporting BCNR at Boston Music Rooms and couldn't really think of a more fitting support for them!

I'll play.

Favourite song by an artist that has played Green Man: Very tough one, but it's hard to look past Flutes by Hot Chip.

Favourite song from an artist on this year’s line up that you think people might not have heard: Bambara - Machete.

A song you like from a band that would be great on the rising stage: DIAT - Missed The Bus.

Best song you’ve heard at GM: Alex Cameron - Runnin' Outta Luck.

Song you a̶r̶e̶/were most looking forward to hearing: You can figure this one out.

Nice choices!

Hadn’t heard of DIAT but that song sounds great. Will check them out more!

Yeah I’ve been listening to Bambara a fair bit - they sound like they’d be great live.

Favourite song by an artist that has played Green Man:  Mythological Beauty by Big Thief

Favourite song from an artist on this year’s line up that you think people might not have heard: Confessions by Sudan Archives

A song you like from a band that would be great on the rising stage: Parakeets by The White Feather Collective

Best song you’ve heard at GM:  Carrion- British Sea Power (2013), I know it's not exactly high grade,  but I don't know what happened during that set, i had a kind of biblical experience.

Song you are/were most looking forward to hearing:   If I was going,  probably Richard Dawson again with stuff off his new album, like The Queens Head.

Was so gutted to miss Big Thief last year. They blew me away in Hammersmith earlier this year. One of my favourite bands. Sadly didn’t play Mythological Beauty which is undoubtedly one of the best.

I was OBSESSED with that Sudan Archives song at the end of last year. It’s incredible - the strings are so powerful.

Hadn’t heard of The White Feather Collective. Sounds good! Is it all instrumental? They’d be a great support for Los Bitchos.

Not heard much from British Sea Power (apart from Waving Flags AGES ago) will check that song out!

Yeah RD was my number one must see. Was very excited to hear the new songs!

I'm not clued up enough to think of many bands suitable for the Rising stage lol. You can never have too much post-punk though, and there's some really good tracks on that Diat record from last year. I haven't listened got round to their older stuff.

I had tickets to see Bambara in a couple of weeks, which I was really looking forward to. They've rescheduled it to late July, which is pretty baffling. Their new album is defo one of the best of the year so far. Serafina is huuuuuge.

Hadn’t heard that Midlake song before. Very nice!

I love all three of those songs - so good! I think I slightly prefer A Thing You Called Joy to Taking on Time but all her songs so far have been great.

Need to check out Tina!

I'd happily agree that A Thing You Called Joy is at least as good live, but I prefer Taking On Time on record. It is Mr Carey producing, after all!
