Also Ultra Mono wasn’t panned wtf.

No panned was extreme but it seemed like 90% of the reviews from people online were negative, and most sites that loved it before it was released didn't love it as much at the end of the year. Probably read the room. The same publications will probably be talking about it as a 'difficult' album around the time of the next release and that they're looking to bounce back lol

Have always wondered who the 2021 headliners would have been if 2020 had happened. They said two have never headlined before, right?

I guess we could work it out on the basis of who releases an album this year. I do think Arctic Monkeys were probably one of them, maybe even Muse as they seem to have dates for 2021 around Glastonbury.

What we may not know is who intended to tour in 2021 but scrapped that due to the circumstances.

The "two that have never headlined before" was for 2020, ie Tay and Kendrick.

Personally I'm absolutely convinced that, at one point at least, Flo was pencilled in for 2021 but I suspect we may never know for sure and it's quite possible - likely even - that at various points there's been more acts pencilled in than there are headline slots.

Eh I dunno, on albumoftheyear it has a user score of 76 with over 1000 reviews which is pretty decent. I agree it's Idles' worst record to date and is generally considered a 'dip' in their discography, but that's comparing it to two of the most acclaimed albums of the last few years. If they didn't have such strong previous releases you surely wouldn't be describing the reception to Ultra Mono as 90% negative.

It's not that people were laying into Ultra Mono, think it's a case of the muted response speaking volumes. They were a band that could do no wrong and they did something wrong. I've not even listened to it once this year.

What? So you didn't line up an album listen so at the stroke of midnight yer man says "eat shit I'm a lover"?

Read this album review in what is basically a publication for Idles fans, written by the editor-in-chief.

https://louderthanwar.com/idles-ultra-mono-album-review/

They later decided there were 25 albums better in the year of our lord twenty20.

edit: this isn't me trying to prove anything by the way so don't argue it. it's just a curio.

No I went with their Reptilia cover to remind myself 2021 will probably be as bad as 2020

(With Alicia Keys on mute on the TV, obviously)

And what about headliners for next year?

“Yeah, we’ve got three,” she replied. “That’s very, very unusual. None of them have been signed up on the dotted line but we’ve got three pencilled in.”

Asked if the bands had headlined before, Eavis replied: “Maybe one? I’m not telling you any more!”

Three headliners pencilled in, and a clue that one had headlined before. All three or two could also have headlined before but it seems she was being intentionally vague.

Talking of air escaping from hype balloons, wasn't Arianna Grande's last album a whole bag of shite?

Kind of, although she’s already so much of a megastar that it doesn’t really matter, plus she’s in the habit of pretty much releasing an album a year right now so any bad feelings there might be towards this one will soon be forgotten when the next one is out in ten months.

My best guess is over the next decade we’ll see...

New headliners:

Taylor, Kendrick, George Ezra, Billie Eilish, The 1975, Dua Lipa, Fleetwood Mac, Lewis Capaldi, Depeche Mode

Returning headliners:

Coldplay, Blur, Arctic Monkeys, Oasis, Beyoncé, Macca

(Left Reg out because I just don’t see him ever doing it)

Isn't there also some slowing in The 1975's momentum?

I think there is but they’re plateauing at headliner level rather than on the way up. I’m not sure if they’ll ever headline as I suspect the festival will always have bigger, more appealing options but they’re definitely a solid option at this point.

The headline level is not Glastonbury headline level, however. I think we could still be in for seeing them sub. Maybe even this year come to think about it. They should have just subbed The Cure like that random shout on Twitter we were obsessed with.

I think because very few acts are active at the moment it’s hard to see beyond the pandemic fog. If it’s going to be 2022/2023 before George Ezra returns to live shows / putting music out there’s a good chance he could be relegated to a returning sub. I don’t think he’s the type of act that can take 3/4 years off and come back where he left off.
