If Spice Girls were booked (which they probably weren’t - doesn’t Mel B have form for chatting shite about them being there?) they could easily just take a third down Pyramid slot if the legend slot was still occupied by Diana, which it looks like it was.

I think they could go in various places. I wouldn’t be surprised if they were pencilled in as a 2021 legend slot option before the cancellation of 2020. They might have tried to squeeze both them and Diana on the pyramid on the same day like you said above and may have been told the event isn’t likely to go ahead.

Agreed. I seem to recall that their last tour sold very badly and basically fizzled out? They were only big for a relatively short period of time and with crowd that probably isn't enormously well represented amongst Glastonbury ticket-buyers.

I think they massively overestimated their popularity. Didn’t they book something ridiculous like ten nights at Wembley? Had they just done a night or two per stadium they’d be looking at much stronger sales, relatively speaking.

Seems strange to me that the Spice Girls, an icon of the 90’s fizzled out whilst a similar act - Take That still sell out stadia to this day.

They did 3 at Wembley and 3 in Manchester when it came to multiple nights on that tour in 2019. Everything sold out but the one thing people complained about was that they had terrible sound and wasnt worth what they paid for in ticket price. I recall seeing videos from the first few dates and it was horrendous for everyone that didnt buy golden circle.

Probably. And they arent trying to just go for the nostalgia ala Spice Girls, theyre trying to get new fans and releasing new tunes so theres enough appeal for new and young fans to want to see them. How about Westlife, theyre still kicking around and selling out stadiums after 20+ years and having a 5 year break in there too.

They came back as a four, without Robbie, and were hugely successful. Then he rejoined for a tour IIRC and left again now there’s only three of them.

But you’re definitely right about them releasing new material. Think they’ve put out three or four albums since coming back. Their tours are also hugely theatrical from what I’ve heard too.

I’ve got a mate who works in security at the Etihad Stadium in Manchester. Always tells me that they’ve had all sorts - football fans, lad bands, massive fuck off rock acts... but the nights that give the most grief are when Take That are in town.

I don't see them as being all that similar in terms of the nature of their popularity.

I was at school when Take That were big - and for what felt like every single girl in my school they were the most important thing in the world. I might be suffering from poor memory, but I'm pretty sure that when they split up (or maybe it was when Robbie left) the Samaritans had to take on extra capacity to cope with all the distraught calls.

Spice Girls became a huge pop culture icon, but I don't think they ever elicited anything close to the same level passion amongst their fans and that's probably the difference in terms of being able to sell tickets today.

I'm 28 and I know more of Take That's newer stuff than any of the old stuff. I know they got the fame from back in the day but you couldn't move for Shine or Patience for years so they'll have done a better job at staying relevant.

People don’t like to admit that Victoria Beckham is a pretty key component of the group. The last ‘reunion’ was definitely hampered by the lack of Victoria.

Shes probably the worst singer of the bunch but she’s the most famous. A fully reformed spice girls with posh would sell way more than their last effort.

While I've said words to the effect of "I don't care who plays if they can actually get the festival on", that'd be the one booking that could actually make me regret it.

I'm not a really a Macca faN. But as a 11 year old girl I was a massive Spice Girls fan (don't blame me! it was 1996!).

Do I think this would be in any way a good booking? Do I fuck.
