Well, with confidence inspiring leadership like this I reckon the supermarkets will be packed this evening.

My work  has been exceptionally busy over the last 4 days ..... 25%  up year on year ...... but that will soon stop as peoples finances hit a buffer .....

How is it mad? Isn't that the very point of containment?

that the point of the govt doing it, yep.

The reality with any festival - corona virus or not - is that it could be canceled at any minute, because shit happens. They don't put stuff on hold because of the million different 'what ifs?' that always exist, they get on with doing everything anyway, because up until it's cancelled it's going ahead.

just had my newsletter for construction enquirer through today -

"The MIPIM property show has been postponed due to concerns over coronavirus. - Property show postponed from March to June"

so maybe they think this will all have blown over by June?

This is the event my work has to cancel because of the virus.

they aren't so good with timelines of  recent events ? :)

Well, I mean, they haven't really said anything about timelines so far... They will have teams of modellers working on it (I know one who is on it at the Foreign Office), which will give a bunch of scenarios. If they do plan to ban all gatherings for X number of weeks or months if we get an x% infection rate, at least we would know.

Of course, the plan is likely to just be infuriatingly non committal.

China is controlling it very well. In one month the numbers have been reduced drastically. We are reaching the point that it will be us who will expand it again to them (with us I mean Iran, Corea, Italy etc etc) xD

like the government response, which has been "We'll tell you about the plan tomorrow, and further details in the coming weeks".  I mean, without being too partisan, that's pretty fucking ridiculous for something proven to only be brought under control by strict management of the situation.

Our government is rudderless.

There’s one huge problem with comparing China to the rest of the world.

They live in a very authoritative society. They do exactly what their government tells them to do. The people have been forced into isolation, some less willingly than others. I doubt the same measures will be possible in a more western free society.

A prime example is of a local case in Yorkshire, they found out that they had the virus and needed to self isolate. The first thing they did was go to the shops to stock up on food.

I’ve also mentioned this before but countries that don’t have free healthcare and limited sick or holiday pay will struggle to stop their people going to work and spreading the virus further. For most Americans for example, not going to work isn’t an option due to the “freedom” in their country.

They have indeed, but their methods have been rather draconian.

China's situation improving over the last week or so is excellent news, but to think it will be the same elsewhere is sadly likely to be wide of the mark.

You should check out China's response to the virus. A lot of the measures have been very drastic and I can't see the UK following suit, nor will the majority of the rest of the world.

Oh yes I've seen videos of the Chinese slaughtering tens of thousands of chickens and what can only be described as a "quarry like" hole full of live pigs being set on fire. The Chinese government don't operate like other places.

It's easier to make draconian decisions in a society used to authoritarian rule. Rightly or wrongly, people over here would feel too entitled to become subservient to professional advice, no matter how qualified. Add to that the prevalence of garbage news presenting itself as 'alternative media' and lapped up by a certain subset of society who - in a contagion context - would seriously undermine containment efforts, and you have a veritable perfect storm.

Perhaps this is how the west ultimately fucks itself.

If you were currently an extreme cult leader (i.e. religious) intent on the downfall of democracy and the death of infidels and the like, would you not be tempted to get a memo out to your sleeper cells to have them get a bit of the ol' coronavirus and spread it about a bit? Discuss.

If you really want to get into Tinfoil Hat territory you should look at where one of China’s top Bio Labs is situated. It’s quite amazing how a virus that specifically targets a section of the population that is ultimately a burden on society has made an appearance at this time.
