It's also official NHS advice,

People at risk of vitamin D deficiency

Some people will not get enough vitamin D from sunlight because they have very little or no sunshine exposure.

The Department of Health and Social Care recommends that you take a daily supplement containing 10 micrograms of vitamin D throughout the year if you:

  • are not often outdoors – for example, if you're frail or housebound
  • are in an institution like a care home
  • usually wear clothes that cover up most of your skin when outdoors

If you have dark skin – for example you have an African, African-Caribbean or south Asian background – you may also not get enough vitamin D from sunlight.

You should consider taking a daily supplement containing 10 micrograms of vitamin D throughout the year.

My reading is suggesting that 10mg (400IU) is a rather low amount if you are deficient.  Not a bad idea for very long term use, but if you suspect you're deficient and you want to protect yourself against an imminent COVID infection, you should be considering a much higher dose.

Of course, I'm far less qualified than Dr Campbell in all thing medical!

Is there any chance your flatmate's friends aren't complete dicks like him and if you tell them you're at risk they'll stop coming round?

Bit of a long shot, it's more likely they are complete dicks but maybe your flatmate hasn't told them so they don't realise they're putting you in danger.

Possibly, but I'm way too anxious to go into a group of guys and tell them they all need to get out.

As for the police, I've already contacted them but they said they can't do anything as it's in a private place.

It perhaps wouldn't bother me so much if it was his partner, or if they stayed in his bedroom, or if it was only occasionally. But it's a group of them, every single day, and they hang out in the communal areas. Why does he think he's the exception to the lockdown rules

My tenancy ends next month so I'm strongly considering moving, either that or I might try and use this situation to get the landlord to lower my rent.

It does seem a low amount but I suppose it's better than nothing. This paper is very interesting, 100% of people over 75 in intensive care were found to be deficient in Vitamin D. It's not been peer reviewed but it's hardly controversial that vitamin D  insufficiency is bad.

As there is zero downside to taking supplements it amazes me that the government aren't mentioning this at the daily briefings etc. Even Van Tam failed to mention it when asked about this subject. I can't believe he isn't aware. It's a politically difficult subject as everyone seems to wants to blame racism and deprivation for this but this lack of information could be costing lives.

She is talking about overdosing on supplements and also doesn't specify whether she means D2 or D3. One of the comments below the paper mentions "toxic D2" so maybe that's the problem one, think i'll take this risk and keep on taking them.

I took vitamin D supplements in winter of last year thinking it would help stave off the winter blues. The end result was daily nausea and nearly passing out on a flight to LA. I was taking the recommended dosage as well. Turns out I wasn’t vitamin D deficient, just miserable. I won’t touch them again. That’s certainly note to write off the benefits to some people though, more to add anecdotal evidence to the contrary of ‘no negatives’ to taking them.

Something interesting I have seen in work today. Ostentatious cleanliness will become a new USP in the new normal. I have heard of a new partnership which will make you fucking roar with laughter.

A household name company is going to be partnering with a cleaning company, promoting “cleaning certified” standards. A new USP for the service industry will be how clean you are in comparison to your competitors.

This sounds so wild but it’s happening. It’s real!

It’s going to be interesting returning back to school. Before school closures the junior school kids were really good hygiene wise, washing hands signing happy birthday, but the school banned hand sanitiser due to it containing alcohol and the secondary school kids will be secondary school kids at & in school.

What! Not sure why they are banning the hand sanitiser cause it contains alcohol thts absurd! Its quite a minimal amount they would have to go some drinking it  for it to be harmful’
I have a quite a big allergy to alcohol and have been advised to continue to use them alongside antihistamine  although using all the sanitisers has an effect on me covid would have an even bigger Impact!
I know they have been worried of the children’s skin drying out due to washing their hands! Some of our schools have also provided the children with mini hand creams each!

I'm not in the habit of using apps that don't work.

Jerkiness aside I'm not sure, I'm leaning on no but I do want to help. I'm hoping the good guys at Apple can swop in and save the day. I'd download their app.

Seems to me like the government are really trying to row back expectations on easing the lockdown after some of those headlines this morning.

yeah, think so.

On a selfish level I just want my kid to be able to meet a couple of her friends. Rest of it I don't care about (although I would like to go to the pub).

How will it actually work in practice...say you get an alert and you self isolate.  Then on day 1 or 2 of being back out again you get another alert...its not going to be realistic for people to keep on self isolating again and again is it if they have no symptoms and have to work, etc

yeah, need a very compliant population, something S Korea has...but not sure we do...
